Udinese – Slump continues despite Juve fightback?
After what could only be described as a disappointing conclusion to their 2020-21 league season, to have held title aspirants Juventus to a 2-2 scoreline on opening weekend has to be seen in a positive light. Le Zebrette claimed just one point from fifteen towards the end of last season, culminating in a 5-1 thrashing at champions Inter Milan on the final day, to finish comfortably mid-table in 13th.
That barren run has since become six (D2 L4) following last week’s valiant performance in Udine. Head coach Luca Gotti must have been ecstatic with the response he got from his team, though, who trailed 2-0 at the break after an abject first 45 minutes passed by without a scoring chance of note created by the hosts. It does, however, mean they are still looking for their first Serie A home win since March (D2 L5).
An elusive victory here at Stadio Fruili is expected to cease come Friday evening. This is because Udinese are facing Venezia, a club which secured their return to the top tier of Italian football through the Serie B play-offs last term. Yet three points are far from a given. Across the past two campaigns, Udinese have failed to register any wins (D2 L4) over newly-promoted opposition in Udine.

Naples was the first port of call as the club from Venice marked their return to Serie A following a 19-year absence with an away duel with the fifth best team in the country last term, Napoli. They must have thought their luck was in early when the hosts were reduced to ten men with a quarter of the contest gone. That numerical advantage didn’t translate into goals, though, succumbing to a 2-0 loss.
Venezia didn’t create a huge amount first time around (0.68 xG), and were soundly beaten in the end (2.47 xGA). Although Napoli are evidently a quality opponent, the fact is the Venetians toiled with a man more on the pitch. Which is a concern moving forward. Although, their record on the road last season in Serie B was commendable. I Lagunari scoring in 15 of 19 away matches, including the last nine.
This would suggest a team which can cause problems in Udine, going up against a Udinese outfit shorn of a defensive clean sheet in their last seven Serie A home games. However, while scoring on their travels didn’t prove much of an issue, winning undoubtedly did. Venezia produced five away wins on their way to promotion, and after defeat in Naples have won once in their past eight attempts (D5 L2).

Udinese, as veterans of this league, will be the more confident heading into their clash at Fruili Stadium but look a touch too short at the prices. Sure their opening result looked good – a 2-2 draw at home to Juventus – but they were gifted their goals and were abject until the first of them was dispatched. Udinese are also winless in seven Serie A home games.
