Uerdingen Preview – Can third division minnows spring an almighty shock in the Pokal?
The third division in Germany is well underway and Uerdingen will have no excuses for lacking preparation as they get excited for the visit of one of Germany’s biggest clubs. The Duisburg-based club have won once and drawn twice in their first four games. Their solitary win came on the opening day of the season – 1-0 success against Hallescher. A defeat to Bayern Munich’s second team ranks as their only loss so far before a couple of 2-2 draws. It’s a decent return for the club and likely to be the story of their season as they bid to avoid a relegation battle.
Focus for Uerdingen now turns to the DFB Pokal and the glamour of facing Borussia Dortmund. It will be a packed capacity for the visit of the Bundesliga giants and a passionate following behind them as it always is in Germany. Firmly up against it to get a result, it will still be an occasion to savour for the hosts and one they will be sure to enjoy.

The new Bundesliga season does not begin for another week but Dortmund already have a trophy in the bag heading into that match. Lucien Favre’s team produced an excellent performance to beat rivals Bayern 2-0 last Saturday in their own stadium. Granted, it will not make up for their agonising defeating in the league last season but it will give them some belief that they can go better this term. It’s easy to be critical of Dortmund and not holding on to their lead, but this is a young and inexperienced team. It’s one of the reasons that Mats Hummels has returned to the club. His arrival should provide some more nous and assist in situations where they were naive at times.
Hummels has been joined by a number of exciting additions further up the field. Thorgan Hazard and Julian Brandt were two of the most explosive attackers in the league last season and will add further firepower to Dortmund’s already packed arsenal. Nico Schulz has arrived from Hoffenheim as well and his dynamism from midfield should be another asset. The squad is stronger on paper and if they can put it all together they will be a threat to all in the league.
