Uganda Preview – Can Uganda continue excellent start to AFCON?

Uganda had gone 39 years without qualifying for the African Cup of Nations until the 2017 competition. Their participation was ended at the group stage on that occasion with their best ever appearance being the 1978 tournament when they finished as runners up. It’s looking positive that they will at least make it to the knockout phase this time around, too. They won their first game at the finals for over 40 years when defeating Congo DR 2-0 in their opening group match. It was an excellent performance and fully deserved one which give them confidence for the remainder of the tournament. A 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe is not a poor result by any means and leaves them on four points heading into Sunday’s match with the host’s nation.

A second placed finish would guarantee them a place in the last 16 but it’s looking already looking more than likely that a haul of four points could see them as one of the best 3rd place teams- The format works in a way that the best four third placed nations progress along with the top two in each of the six sections. Uganda will not be looking to take any chances, however, and know a draw would be enough to see them occupy second spot.

Egypt – Are hosts going to get the result they need to top Group A?

Egypt are the most successful team in African Cup of Nations history with seven tournament wins. The most recent of those was back in 2010 but they were finalists two years ago and have won it all three times it’s been hosted in their country. That’s the challenge that awaits them now with the tournament having been relocated from Cameroon at a late stage. The hosts sit on maximum points at the moment with two wins from as many games. Zimbabwe proved to be stubborn opposition in their opening game with a solitary goal from Trezeguet enough to take the three points. It was a little more comfortable against Congo DR next time out with a 2-0 victory. That win was particularly significant as it provided Mohammed Salah with his first goal in the tournament. Already qualified for the knockout phase, Egypt will now want to ensure top spot.

Javier Aguirre took over as manager last August after Egypt’s poor performance in the World Cup. The vastly experienced coach looks to be a perfect match for the approach that has worked so well for this nation in the past. A defensively sound unit who have a difference maker in attack.

Key-Facts – Uganda v Egypt

  • Egypt have already qualified for the knockout phase and need a point to top the group
  • Uganda have performed admirably thus far and require a point to guarantee their place in the last 16
  • A draw therefore is suitable for both and three of Uganda’s last four matches have ended this way

Uganda v Egypt Betting Advice

It’s been a very encouraging start for both these nations. Egypt are guaranteed for a place in the knockout stage which is to be expected. Uganda’s form has been perhaps more surprising, and they are also on the brink of playing in the last 16. It does not take a genius to realise that a draw would be suitable for both sides and their aspirations. That point would guarantee Uganda finish second and also ensure Egypt top the group. The other school of thought, of course, is that a win would see Uganda top the group.

I am of the opinion in these games that neither team is going to fully exert themselves in their quest for the three points. It’s not exactly been a tournament filled with goals either and games can often be cagey. That leads me to think the best option in this game is to back with the draw. It may be a cynical bet but Uganda are a stuffy team at the best of times and have drawn three of their last four as well.
