It’s a meeting of the top two in Group B as Ukraine look for the point that would seal qualification whilst current European champions Portugal will be hoping to edge closer towards next summer’s finals themselves.

Euro 2020 Qualifying Betting at Sportingbet

Ukraine Preview – Can Ukraine secure the result they need to cap a great campaign and qualify for Euro 2020?

It could barely have been a better campaign for Ukraine up until this point. With two games left, they require only a point to make it to their third straight European Championships. The only points they have dropped in their six qualifiers thus far game away to Portugal in the first round of games back in March. That was a goalless draw and a result that has set them on their way. It’s been a flawless campaign since as Andriy Shevchenko’s men have reeled off five straight wins. The latest of those came at home to Lithuania when winning 2-0 at home on Friday, completing a quick double over that nation having won in Kaunas back in September. Those six points have now put them on the brink of qualification.

The pick of their wins in this campaign was undoubtedly the 5-0 win at home to Serbia in early June. Gaining such a dominant win so early in the section has set them on their way and even though they require a point to make it official, it also means the Serbians would have to better that score in a head to head should the teams finish level on points. Shevchenko and his players will not be worrying about that just yet and looking to take care of business themselves. Getting a result against the reigning champions would certainly be doing it in style.

1-1 Correct Score

Portugal Preview – Will Portugal continue their winning run in this group and go close to ensuring they reach the finals?

Being drawn in a group with both Serbia and Ukraine meant this campaign was never going to be straightforward for Portugal. They got confirmation of that at the beginning of the section when being held to home draws against those opponents. Those are results which have focused the minds of Cristiano Ronaldo and company however – winning their next three games and scoring 12 goals in the process. A 4-2 win in Serbia followed by a thumping 5-1 away to Lithuania got them right back into contention before a routine win at home to Luxembourg on Friday. Ronaldo has scored half of the goals across those three games.

Portugal have played a game less than Ukraine and can close to within a point of the leaders with a win in Kiev on Monday. A draw would not be a terrible result either, however, as it would ensure they are a minimum two points clear of Serbia in the race for second. As they face very winnable ties against Lithuania and Luxembourg to complete this section they would be confident of taking maximum points should they need to.

Key-Facts – Ukraine v Portugal

  • Ukraine have been excellent throughout this whole campaign and know that a draw here would see them qualify for Euro 2020
  • It was a slow start for the reigning champions but they have shown their class recently and have won their last three in style
  • These nations met in the opening round of fixtures in this group, playing out a competitive draw in Lisbon

Ukraine v Portugal Betting Advice

It’s the penultimate fixture between two of the three qualification hopefuls in this group. Ukraine could fail to take another point from their remaining two matches and still qualify but they will want to avoid any dramas. Portugal know what they have to do as well and whilst they will be hoping for all three points, they too would be in an extremely strong position to go through should they take a point.
There was nothing to choose between these teams in the first meeting and both have been very impressive since. It would be something of a surprise if neither of these teams reach the finals as things currently stand. As alluded to above, a draw would be a favourable result for both as it would qualify Ukraine and see Portugal stay clear of Serbia in third. It looks a bet worth chancing.
