Europe-chasing Union host relegation threatened Hertha on Sunday as the Berlin derby takes centre stage in the Bundesliga.

Union Berlin Preview – Can Union extend their unbeaten run at home to 13 matches?

Having finished 11th last season in what was their first time playing in the Bundesliga last season, the general feeling was that if Union could match that then they would be looking at another successful season. Indeed, for many promoted teams the second season is often harder. Not for Union, however. With eight game remaining, Urs Fischer’s men are in with a chance of finishing in the top seven which would bring with it European football for the first time in the club’s history.

It’s a remarkable effort from a club with their resources and one which they will be determined to see through. Union are now five points behind Bayer Leverkusen who won on Saturday so they that as well as the local bragging rights, a win here moves them back to within a couple.

You can look at Union’s home record in two ways. On one hand having seven draws from 13 matches could be seen as wasteful but taking everything into consideration it should be seen as a positive in that very few teams depart the unique stadium with three points. Augsburg remain the only visiting team to have managed that so far this season.
As you would expect from a team with such a home record, Union’s defensive record is also good. They’ve allowed only 14 goals – that’s good enough to be the third best home defensive record in the division.

Hertha Berlin Preview – Will Hertha give themselves some breathing space with a first away win since November?

This was expected to be the season where Hertha were challenging for Europe and seeing the benefit of a vast investment over the last 12 months or so. Instead, the traditionally biggest club in the city are attempting to stay in the league whilst looking on in envy as their neighbours enjoy what could be their best ever season.

Bruno Labbadia didn’t even last a year in the job before being let go and his replacement, Pal Dardai, knows his objective is simply to keep Hertha in the Bundesliga.

Dardai has given the club some hope in doing just that as Hertha have won two of their last three games, moving them to fourth bottom but only one point above Koln who sit directly below them. It leaves little margin for error but they do actually have a favourable-looking run-in as they don’t play anybody currently ranked higher than tomorrow’s opponents between now and the end of the season.

Few will expect Hertha to get all three points from this match, though, as they have managed only two away wins all season. The most recent of those coming back in November.

Union Berlin vs Hertha Berlin Betting Advice

This remains a novelty around this fixture as it’s just the fourth time the two clubs have faced each other in the t0p-flight. Hertha hold the advantage having won the last two, and doing so in comfortable fashion. It was a 3-1 victory for them back in December but they did lose here on their last visit – 1-0 last season.

Key Facts – Union Berlin vs Hertha Berlin Betting Tip

  • Union are attempting to finish in the European positions, of which they are currently five points behind
  • Hertha have won just two away games in the Bundesliga all season, defeating Werder Bremen and Augsburg
  • Hertha have won the last two derby games with an aggregate score of 7-1

This is going to have implications in both club’s pursuits of their objectives but it could well be a repeat of last year’s home victory for Union. They are unbeaten in their last 12 at home and with Hertha’s troubles on the road there for all to see, the home team can take the derby spoils.
