Union Berlin Preview – Can Union Berlin build on recent point?
Union Berlin were handed a heavy 3-1 defeat at home by Augsburg on the opening day of the new German Bundesliga season but the hosts managed to bounce back last weekend by holding Borussia M’Gladbach to a well-earned point in a 1-1 draw which will give Union Berlin confidence ahead of this Friday night clash against Mainz.
Recent form has been steady enough for Union Berlin as the hosts have lost just two of their previous seven matches in the Bundesliga overall, and just one loss in their last six matchews on home turf at their Stadion An der Alten Försterei.
Union Berlin have also been a hard team to beat for visitors, Mainz, as Friday night’s hosts have avoided defeat in each of the last three meetings between these two sides, which includes two draws and a 3-2 away win for the Berlin side back in November of last year.

Back-to-back defeats against RB Leipzig 3-1 away from home was followed by an even heavier 4-1 defeat at home to Stuttgart and although it’s still early days in this German top flight season, the latter result would have certainly sounded some early alarm bells around the Mainz camp.
Mainz have also managed to win just two of their last seven matches on the road in the Bundesliga and although one of those wins was at Borussia Dortmund, it’s a new season now with new challenges for the visitors.
