Preview: A point in Mexico City on Thursday helped USA inch closer to a place at the 2022 World Cup. Should they go one better when Panama, who know defeat could scupper all remaining hopes of playing in Qatar later this year, visit Orlando this Sunday, there is the potential for Gregg Berhalter’s men to wrap up qualification with a game to spare.

USA – Berhalter’s men can make it six from seven as hosts?

Disappointment had to be the overriding emotion from Thursday’s goalless draw in Mexico City as the USA were held by Mexico. A point from a fixture with a notoriously brutal history for the Stars and Stripes would have been viewed as a huge positive before kick-off. And in the grand scheme of automatic qualification, still is. But Gregg Berhalter’s men were terrific on the night, creating enough to warrant a famous victory.

That stalemate took their record in this third and final qualifying stage to W6 D4 L2 for the United States, who are a near-perfect five from six as hosts. Only Canada, in a 1-1 draw, and Costa Rica, in a 2-1 loss, could even muster a goal away to Berhalter’s well-drilled outfit. Encouraging news therefore ahead of Sunday’s revenge mission against Panama, who ground out a 1-0 win in last October’s reverse encounter.

Key Stat: Four of the USA’s five home victories in this CONCACAF third qualifying stage were earned whilst not conceding a goal. They have recorded a clean sheet in precisely 50% (6/12) of qualifiers so far.

Panama – Successive World Cup appearances in peril?

Qualification to the end-of-year World Cup finals in Qatar was in Panama’s own hand prior to the first of three remaining qualifiers getting underway in Panama City on Thursday night. That is no longer the case, though. A 1-1 scoreline against bottom-side Honduras – who were successful in their attempts to avoid an eighth successive qualifying defeat – resulted in Los Canaleros relinquishing control of the play-off berth.

Having dropped to fifth on the back of that result, Panama know they must make up a one point deficit on fourth-place Costa Rica. And while that may not seem an impossible task, there are only two games left in which to do so – versus the teams in first and second, Canada and the USA. First up is a trip to the latter, where they simply must better a return of seven points across six away qualifiers thus far (W2 L3).

Key Stat: Three of the four away losses for Panama in this third qualifying round came via 1-0 scorelines, while both victories (vs Jamaica and Honduras) saw them net exactly three goals.

USA Vs Panama Betting Advice

With how events transpired on Thursday, a win on Sunday would mark a significant move towards sealing automatic qualification to Qatar 2022 for the USA – it may even suffice should Costa Rica fail to take all three points in El Salvador. They are expected to do just that, thus preserving an excellent home record in which table-toppers Canada were the only visiting team to prevent the USMNT from collecting maximum points.

USA Vs Panama– Key Facts:

  • Anibal Godoy’s solitary strike settled matters when the sides met in Panama City in October, halting a sequence of four successive losses to the USA.
  • USA boast a record of five wins out of six as hosts in qualifying thus far, recording four wins to nil. Panama are W2 L4 away, losing to nil on three occasions.
  • Panama would only trail at half-time in two of six away qualifiers, while USA have only held a lead at the interval on one of six occasions.

Complicating matters slightly are Panama, who could find themselves in a desperate situation should they fall behind early doors. Anything less than a point leaves the visitors staring early elimination in the face. Meanwhile the USA boast five wins from six as hosts, spelling out big trouble for Sunday’s guests. However, only one of these victories, versus bottom-side Honduras, saw the US establish a half-time lead.
