Valencia have made a sluggish start to their new Spanish La Liga campaign as they’ve drawn three and lost once in their first four matches of the new season; stalemates against Atletico Madrid, Levante and Real Betis have been compounded by a 2-0 defeat away at Espanyol, so the hosts appear to have an uphill task of getting something in tonight’s clash with Juventus.
Turning to the Champions League, it’s been three seasons since they were involved at this level and they didn’t cover themselves in glory as they suffered three defeats on the trot to Gent, Zenit and Lyon.
The hosts seem to be on the back foot as they head into this important Champions League opening fixture.
By contrast, Juventus have hit the ground running as they sit top of Serie A after having won all four of their opening matches on the domestic scene with wins over Chievo, Lazio, Parma and Sassuolo.
Even more encouraging for Juventus is that new signing, Cristiano Ronaldo scored his first goals for The Old Lady in the recent win over Sassuolo and will look to get his goalscoring tally off the mark for his new club in this evening’s encounter with Valencia.
Ronaldo is likely to form a dangerous strike partnership with Mandzukic up front while the likes of Pjanic, Khedira, Cuadrado and Matuidi will break up the play and provide opportunities for the front two here.
Valencia’s slow start to the season could well come back to bite them here against an in-form and upbeat Juventus outfit. My betting tips suggest backing Juventus with the handicap in this one.
