Preview: Both are in Champions League action during the week. So it feels apt that the pair should spa against each other beforehand, with goal-shy Atletico Madrid heading to Valencia and the Mestalla for the first of this weekend’s action in Spain’s La Liga.

Valencia Preview – Los Che in better frame of mine of the two sides?

If only Valencia (7th – W10 D7 L6) could get their act together on the road, they would be nestled inside the Champions League places about now. Formidable at their Mestalla stadium – one of three remaining teams still to lose a home fixture since the start of the season (W7 D5) – but extremely volatile and unreliable when asked to travel, with last week’s 3-0 loss in Getafe a second successive three-goal margin of defeat away from home and a third such game without a win.

Valencia possess a mixed record when it comes to playing at home immediately after an away loss (W3 D2). The one constant, however, is that they remain unbeaten in front of their home fans and that includes hosting the top-two – denied a win right at the death against Real Madrid but dispatching Barcelona (2-0) without so much as conceding. This encounter completes that particular set, with Atletico Madrid considered among the best three sides in the country.

Unfortunately, Los Che’s record in this fixture is not particularly encouraging. Their most recent win dating back to 2014, a 3-1 scoreline on home soil. Since then they have lost six of nine meetings, which includes two losses and as many draws from the encounters at Mestalla. Therefore Valencia, who have won each of their last three La Liga fixtures at home without conceding a single goal (Barcelona, Celta Vigo and Eibar), must buck at least one negative trend this weekend in order to make up lost ground on the top-four.

Draw & Under 2.5 Goals

Atletico Madrid Preview – Lack of potency dampens any Atleti appeal?

Before focus can switch towards the Champions League, which returns on Tuesday when Liverpool make their way to the Wanda Metropolitano, there is the small matter of a trip to the Mestalla. And boy do Atletico Madrid (4th – W10 D9 L4) need a win to boost some ailing confidence. Preferably a couple goals for good measure. Although, expecting the latter to come to fruition is a tad speculative at the moment.

Last week’s slender victory over Granada at home, winning 1-0 through an early Angel Correa strike, marked both their first win and goal for four La Liga matches. Prior contests with Eibar (L2-0), Leganes (0-0) and Real Madrid (L1-0) seeing them register a meagre one point and fail to find the back of the net in three successive games, emphasising their extreme goalscoring woes this season. No team inside the top-eight comes close to their pitiful goal-a-game ratio (23 in 23 games).

Some good news, however, comes from the physio room, as a whole host of key players are expected to return to action imminently. This game will probably come too soon for some though, with Diego Costa, Alvaro Morata and Joao Relix all rated doubtful. That hardly bodes well for their chances of securing what would only be a second win in the last nine away league fixtures (W1 D5 L2 beforehand), having lost the most recent two to nil and failed to score in three of the last four.

Valencia Vs Atletico Madrid Betting Advice

Champions League football returns during the week for these two sides. Before then, a meeting with each other and it is one Valencia will be the more confident of winning. Los Che are targeting their fourth straight home win, having recently beaten Barcelona, Celta Vigo and Eibar there to nil. Whereas Atletico Madrid will be trying to avoid a third consecutive away defeat – both of which were without scoring. A Valencia To Nil at 15/4 (Bet365) anyone?

Valencia Vs Atletico Madrid – Key Facts:

  • Valencia are still to suffer a home defeat in La Liga this season (W7 D5) and have won the last three such games without conceding a goal.
  • Atletico Madrid failed to score in three of the last four away league games and have won only once on their travels in eight (W1 D2 L5).
  • Four of the previous five head-to-head encounters produced no more than two goals in the match, which includes a couple of low-scoring draws in the last two meetings staged in Valencia (1-1 and 0-0).

As already highlighted in the Valencia part of the preview, the hosts do not have the best of records in this fixture. The last four meetings at Mestalla, meanwhile, producing a couple of draws (0-0 and 1-1) and as many Atletico wins (2-0 and 3-1). This does feel like an opportune moment for Los Che to finally register a rare win but, just like how the previous two encounters in Valencia produced low-scoring stalemates, I think the value rests in the price of a draw. There is unlikely to be much between them, plus goals could be scarce.
