Spanish La Liga
Pick: Both Teams to Score
Odds: 19/20

Preview: With neither team able to secure a win over the weekend – Valencia drawing away to Barcelona and Sevilla held at home by a stubborn Valladolid – can either head into the short Christmas break on a high with victory inside the Mestalla? Recent history suggests not, with the past two La Liga meetings here finishing 1-1.

Valencia – Struggling for wins despite remaining competitive?

In a season where Barcelona find themselves well off the current title pace due to their own inconsistencies, for Valencia (W3 D6 L5) to then get a result at the Camp Nou on Saturday perhaps doesn’t qualify as much of a surprise any longer. Even so, the manner of their performance, particularly on the back of some questionable form (they had only won one league game in their last nine attempts), was no less impressive.

Los Che took the game right to Ronald Koeman’s side, capitalising on an error at the back to establish an early lead before showing great character to register a point despite falling behind shortly after half-time. Maxi Gomez’s fourth league goal of 2020/21 enough to earn the valiant visitors a 2-2 draw that was hardly an injustice, after creating ample scoring opportunities to merit a result (xG: BAR 2.56 – 1.99 VAL).

Valencia have now taken four points from six against Barca and Real Madrid this season, beating the latter 4-1 here at Mestalla in November, in what remains their sole win in the last ten games in La Liga. They also went down narrowly here to leaders Atletico Madrid, losing to a late own goal. Evidently they are capable of competing, yet it is now five league games without a win (D4 L1) for manager Javi Gracia.

Sevilla – Lopetegui’s men keen to regain ground at the top?

The Andalusians were mere minutes away from strengthening their position towards the top of La Liga – and mere minutes from landing us a tidy winner, after we highlighted their chances of securing a narrow victory beforehand – but were denied in the dying embers of their contest with Real Valladolid on Saturday. Instead, a 1-1 draw at their Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan means they remain nine points off the summit.

When you’re reliant on winning matches by the odd goal due to an ability to regularly locate the back of the opposition net, you’re inevitably going to come unstuck every now and then. This was certainly the case last time out, as despite doing enough to possibly warrant all three points (xG: SEV 1.64 – 1.17 RVA), they were denied their fifth win in six following a late Raul Garcia strike three minutes from time.

Sevilla (W6 D2 L4) have now scored just 14 times in 12 league games, a figure bettered by 12 other teams, while only twice – in wins 1-3 and 4-2 victories over Cadiz and Celta Vigo respectively – have they netted more than once. In other words, Julen Lopetegui’s well-organised side are fairly blunt, scoring exactly one goal on seven occasions which includes in recent away wins over Getafe and Huesca (both 1-0 scorelines).

Valencia Vs Sevilla Betting Advice

Games involving Valencia rare rarely dull. All but one of the last nine in La Liga featuring three or more goals, with five of those going over 3.5. The opposite can be said about Sevilla, though. The Andalusians seeing five of their previous six league matches feature no more than a solitary goal, and only two of the four that were staged away from home produce more than two.

Valencia Vs Sevilla – Key Facts:

  • Seven of the previous nine La Liga games for Valencia featured both teams scoring, with Los Che failing to win any of their last five in the competition (D4 L1).
  • Just two of the last six league games involving Sevilla produced goals for both sides, with Julen Lopetegui’s men dropping points only twice during this period (W4 D1 L1).
  • Five of the past seven La Liga meetings in Valencia finished with both teams among the goal, with each of the previous two seasons ending in a share of the spoils (both 1-1).

Perhaps the biggest influence on Tuesday’s fixture, therefore, will be the venue. Four of seven La Liga games at the Mestalla this season produced Over 3.5 Goals, while both teams scored in five. For Valencia, meanwhile, seven of the last nine league games featured both teams among the goals, as has been the case in five of the past seven La Liga meetings held in Valencia between the sides (1-1 in 2018/19 & 2019/20).
