Real Valladolid Preview – ‘Pucela’ a different beast when at home?

Losing 3-0 away to Deportivo Alaves immediately prior to the international break made it successive road defeats for Sergio Gonzalez and his Real Valladolid (13th – W4 D5 L4, GF14 GA17) team, having also been crushed 5-1 by the champions, Barcelona, at the Camp Nou. It has been a different story altogether inside their José Zorrilla stadium, though, where they have won their most recent two La Liga fixtures and are one of seven teams that remain unbeaten on home soil in 2019/20.

These eye-catching exploits in front of their home faithful are valid enough reasons why a bet on the hosts once again avoiding defeat this weekend isn’t as preposterous as it sounds. Both Atletico Madrid and Granada have been excelling in the early months; both had to settle for draws in this same fixture. The former were especially fortunate in earning a 0-0 scoreline, indebted to Valladolid striker Sandro Ramirez spurning an opportunity to score from the penalty spot.

From a defensive point of view, Valladolid have been formidable at home. Just two goals conceded is the joint-best figure in La Liga, while no visiting team has so far managed more than a solitary goal. The latest three – Atletico Madrid, Eibar and Real Mallorca – would fail to score at all, with the latter two both consigned to defeats, losing 2-0 and 3-0 respectively. Unsurprisingly, only one of five home encounters would breach the three goals or more mark.

Sevilla Preview – Can Lopetegui’s men keep pace with title hopefuls?

A rocky spell towards the end of September-early October, in which only three points were claimed from a possible twelve (W1 L3), threatened to undermine the positive early work made by Sevilla (4th – W7 D3 L3, GF17 GA14), who at one stage were top of La Liga. It is of huge credit to them, then, that since losing 4-0 away to Barcelona on 6 October, the team has embarked on a five-game unbeaten run (W3 D2) which has them firmly back in the title picture.

Now only a point behind leaders Barcelona, who head a pack of five teams separated by just two points, Sevilla manager Julen Lopetegui knows how important another win would be this weekend. Last season would see them achieve just this in the corresponding fixture, netting twice inside the final ten minutes to record a gritty 2-0 victory. Remarkably, though, that was a maiden triumph away to Valladolid in La Liga, finally doing so at the tenth attempt no less (W1 D5 L4 away H2H).

It would be fair to say this has been a problematic fixture over the years. That could well prove to be the case again if the team’s recent struggles on the road are anything to go by. Sevilla begun the season winning their opening three away fixtures against Alaves (0-1), Espanyol (0-2) and Granada (0-1), but have since won one of four said matches (W1 D1 L2). Victory in the Andalusian Derby a fortnight ago represented a first away success since the middle of September, edging out Real Betis to win 2-1.

Real Valldolid Vs Sevilla Key Facts:

  • Valladolid are one of seven clubs in La Liga who remain unbeaten at home in 2019/20 (W2 D3).
  • Sevilla have put together five consecutive league matches without losing (W3 D2), but have won only one of their previous four on the road (W1 D1 L2).
  • Last season, Sevilla secured a rare away win against Valladolid – a first in ten such fixtures (W1 D5 L4).

Betting Summary

Yet to lose a single home game this season, Real Valladolid (3/1 WilliamHill) are seemingly being underestimated by bookmakers who make them clear outsiders, despite boasting home advantage. In fact, only two teams have even managed a goal at their ground in 2019/20 and have clocked up over five hours since last conceding a home goal, shutting out Atletico Madrid (0-0), Eibar (2-0) and Mallorca (3-0) prior to hosting this fixture.

Sevilla (19/20 Betway) went into the recent break on a high, after overcoming local rivals Real Betis to win a hard-fought encounter 2-1; their first away win in four (W1 D1 L2), whilst also extending their current run without losing in the league to five (W3 D2). The club remain firmly in the title picture as things stand, sat a point off the leaders in fourth, so will know the value of a win here.

Historically, this has been a torrid fixture for Sevilla (one win in ten visits). Valladolid, meanwhile, have been very consistent at home this season. Their five home fixtures have produced two victories, three draws and only the two goals conceded. So this is by no means an easy assignment for the favourites, who are worth opposing after only one win from their last four away matches.
