Preview: Four wins from the last five games has earned Los Angeles FC a five-point lead in the race for Supporters Shield bragging rights. However, the Black and Gold don’t hold many fond memories of previous visits to BC Place, the venue for Sunday’s MLS outing against a Vancouver Whitecaps side unbeaten in five on home turf.

Vancouver Whitecaps – Caps mean customers inside BC Place?

The Whitecaps’ MLS Play-Off aspirations were dealt a minor blow during the week with a scoreless draw at home to New England. The latter accrued the most points in the league last time round so it was far from a disastrous result for Vanni Sartini and his team, whose recent form – with three wins in their last five MLS games and only two defeats in nine (W5 D2 L2) – gives them a platform to bounce back this Sunday.

A point a piece was a fair result midweek (xG from that game: VAN 1.16 – 1.12 NEW). However that was an eighth MLS game in nine in which they put up xG figures that were either similar or inferior to that of their opponents. This somewhat dents the appeal of a memorable win materialising, against indisputably the best team in MLS right now. Though the Blue and Whites are strong at home, putting up W4 D2 L1 at BC Place.

Key Stat: Vancouver Whitecaps had scored a goal in the 90th minute or later in four consecutive MLS home games, before playing out a goalless encounter against New England Revolution last time out at BC Place.

Los Angeles FC – Stars aligning for Black and Gold?

As others falter, this LAFC side, which now holds a five-point advantage on the rest of the league, goes from strength to strength. The scary part, however, is they will only emerge stronger in the weeks to come when, on Thursday, July 7, the second MLS transfer window opens. At which point, Los Angeles will house not one but two global superstars of the sport: defender Giorgino Chiellini and forward Gareth Bale.

That pair will provide additional star quality to a team with the best points-per-game ratio in MLS (2.12), most goals scored (35 in 17 games) and third-fewest conceded (18). In other words, I’m not even sure this team is in need of reinforcements – but they’re getting them anyway. They were convincing winners last time out, defeating FC Dallas 3-1 in LA for their fourth victory in a five-game unbeaten stretch.

Key Stat: Nine of eleven MLS victories for LAFC in 2022 saw them prevail by a winning margin of two goals or better. However, they would win only one of their last three fixtures away from home (W1 D1 L1).

Vancouver Whitecaps Vs Los Angeles FC Betting Advice

Los Angeles FC are making all the correct noises, on and off the field, but I cannot get on board with them at the current market line for their trip to Vancouver. For starters, they haven’t so much as secured a point on the road against The Whitecaps in three subsequent visits following a 2-0 triumph in their first trip to these parts, in April 2018, succumbing by a single goal in 2019 (1-0), 2020 and 20201 (both 2-1).

Vancouver Whitecaps Vs Los Angeles FC – Key Facts:

  • Ryan Hollingshead’s brace inspired Los Angeles FC to a 3-1 victory when the sides met in March. This latest meeting could produce an entirely differing outcome in Vancouver, where each of the last three meetings went the way of the Whitecaps.
  • Adding to this, Vancouver Whitecaps are currently enjoying a five-game unbeaten spell as an MLS host (W3 D2). Meanwhile, LAFC would win only two of their last five as the visiting side (D1 L2).
  • Just two teams – Portland Timbers (3 goals), San Jose Earthquakes (also 3 goals) – would score more than one goal in an MLS away game versus Vancouver Whitecaps in 2022. This will be their ninth home encounter of the campaign.

There is also LAFC’s record when travelling to take into consideration. Steve Cherundolo’s side hold a five-point lead in the Supporters Shield race but have picked just two wins in their five most recent away fixtures (D1 L2). Furthermore, Vancouver is a mean place to visit, with none of the last five visiting teams (FC Dallas, New England, Real Salt Lake, SJ Earthquake, Toronto) emerging with the win.
