There is big boxing betting coming up on the weekend with Vasyl Lomachenko making a return of the ring.

Ukraine’s Lomachenko has been a world champion at three different weight classes. He’s not one currently.

This will be his first fight since a loss against Teofimo Lopez in October last year where he lost his belts.

This fight against Japan’s Masayoshi Nakatani sets Lomachenko back on the road to a potential shot at more future belts.

Vasyl Lomachenko Preview – Speed the key for Lomachenko

This feels like the beginning of the road to redemption for Ukraine fighter Vasyl Lomachenko.

He gets back into the ring for the first time since losing both his WBA and WBO lightweight titles against American Teofimo Lopez last year.

That moved Lomachenko onto a W14 L2 career record.

The other loss in his career was in just his second fight, a WBO featherweight dual back in 2014 with Orlando Salido.

The defeat against Lopez happened behind closed doors and came by a unanimous decision.

Lomachenko had a slow start to the fight, unusually cautious through the first half.

But then when he started opening up, he was caught a lot late on in the fight. No rematch was contracted.

So Lomachenko takes on Masayoshi on the weekend.

For boxing betting bookmakers have Lomachenko as the odds-on 1/16 favourite* (odds recorded 19:16 GMT on June 25th, 2021).

But digging a little deeper this is a little more interesting than it may first appear to be on paper.

Our betting prediction:

10 of Lomachenko’s victories in his career have been accomplished by a knockout.

Lomachenko is fighting a former champion here. For boxing betting, we think that this has a fair chance of going all the way.

The yes option for the fight to go the distance is at 10/11, but we would instead swing for Over 10.5 Total Rounds at 4/5* (odds recorded 19:16 GMT on June 25th, 2021).

The Ukrainian is a tricky customer as he is quick on his feet, can switch stances and overall has a lot of speed in his arsenal.

Three of his last four fights though, including one against Luke Campbell in 2019, have gone the distance.

Lomachenko’s method of victory coming via a decision is at 11/10* (odds recorded 19:16 GMT on June 25th, 2021).

Masayoshi Nakatani Preview – Can former champion cause an upset?

Masayoshi Nakatani is a former lightweight champion who holds a W19 L1 record in his professional career.

The interesting thing here is that he faced Teofimo Lopez in 2019, a year before Lomachenko had a go at the American.

Nakatani took Lopez the distance, losing on a unanimous decision at the end of the day.

So he has stuck in there with one of the best in the division.

The Japanese fighter has been in action once since then, getting a knockout success over Felix Verdejo in December last year.

In that success, he picked up the vacant WBO inter-continental lightweight title.

That was some duel as both fighters exchanged two knockdowns each and Nakatani was down on the card at the time the fight was stopped

There is a quote of 9/1 on the win for Nakatani for boxing betting on the weekend* (odds recorded 19:16 GMT on June 25th, 2021).

This is going to be another big test for him.

Masayoshi Nakatani did want a rematch with Lopez but that didn’t happen.

You get the feeling that the winner of this bout, therefore, will likely get a shot against the American.

So there could be a lot riding on this one. Lomachenko has shown a lot of respect for Nakatani in choosing him to face.

Lomachenko wanted the biggest test that he could as he started the search for titles. This could be interesting.

Vasyl Lomachenko vs Masayoshi Nakatani Betting Advice

After his shock defeat to Teofimo Lopez last year, we do expect Lomachenko to get himself back on track.

The former Olympic gold medallist is the bigger fighter of the two.

We think this looks like being the Vasyl Lomachenko by Decision option for boxing betting at 11/10* (odds recorded 19:16 GMT on June 25th, 2021).

Lomachenko is a calm fighter and takes calculated risks. We think he does enough for the win.

Key Facts – Vasyl Lomachenko vs Masayoshi Nakatani Betting Tip

  • Both fighters have lost against current unified lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez
  • Vasyl Lomachenko is a former three division champion
  • Masayoshi Nakatani faces his third fight only in the US

Nakatani did go the distance with Lopez, as did Lomachenko. The Japanese fighter showed a lot of grit in his follow up against Verdejo.

Nakatani was put down twice, and still got himself up to find a way to win.

He should have learned a lot from that fight, namely knowing that he can’t let Lomachenko get on the inside, as that’s how Verdejo hurt him.

Nakatani has a significant height and reach advantage and needs to use that to keep the Ukrainian at arm’s length. But the win for him looks to be out of reach.
