Verona Preview – Will Verona make it consecutive wins for the first time since November following victory over SPAL?

Having won promotion from Serie B last season, Verona find themselves in a very strong position to ensure they remain in the top-flight for another campaign. Currently in 11th spot, they are eight points clear of the relegation zone. With this match marking the halfway point in the season there is obviously a long way to go yet before they can say with confidence they’re safe. However, a win on Sunday and they creep ever closer to their target. Verona also have a game in hand, albeit that is against high-flying Lazio.

It was a strong start to this year for Verona as they beat bottom of the table SPAL last Sunday. It was a first win in four games and one that just eases the tension slightly.

It’s been a mixed bag for Verona in terms of their home form so far. Nine games played and they have three wins, three draws and three defeats. All three of their wins have come against teams below them in the table which is a good pointer ahead of Genoa’s visit considering they reside in the bottom three.

Where Ivan Juric will be looking for some improvement on previous homes games is in defence. His team have allowed three goals in each of their last two at home.

It was a struggle last season and it looks like being even more challenging this time around for Genoa and their bid to stay in Serie A. It was essentially one goal that kept them up last season having amassed 38 points and if they are to escape again, then they will have to really get moving in this second half of the campaign. With 18 games played Genoa only have 14 points, so they are very much up against it and have to start picking up points soon.

To their credit, Genoa picked up a hugely important three points on Monday, defeating Sassuolo 2-1. That was their first win in the league since October.

One positive that Genoa can look to build on for the remainder of the season is the emergence of Christian Kouame. The Ivorian has five goals in 11 matches and his partnership with the veteran Goran Pandev is going to be vital if they are to avoid the drop. The duo are responsible for nine of their team’s 19 goals and have to remain fit. Pandev scored the winning goal against Sassuolo, striking with less than five minutes to go.
