Hellas Verona – Will a response to shock Brescia result be forthcoming?

Competing in next season’s edition of the Europa league remains a genuine possibility for Hellas Verona (8th – W11 D9 L10), the club who were only recently promoted back to the top tier of Italian football after prevailing in last season’s Serie B play-offs. But not if more results like the one produced in Brescia on Sunday, when they were beaten 2-0 by the team who started the weekend in last place, crop up in their final eight fixtures.

Expected to clinch maximum points at Brescia’s Mario Rigamonti, Ivan Juric’s Verona side would instead slump to a surprising 2-0 defeat, having been priced up as odds-on favourites before kick-off. Just a third league defeat since the middle of December. However, it was a second in five (W2 D1 L2) since the action resumed following the enforced break, after losing by an identical scoreline at home to Napoli last month.

Napoli’s victory also ended a four-game winning streak for Verona at their Bentegodi stadium. And while it wasn’t exactly a case of business as usual next time out at home, requiring a fairly late goal to see off a spirited Parma, the 3-2 scoreline was at least a swift return to winning ways. One man worth keeping tabs on, meanwhile, is striker Samuel di Carmine who has netted three goals across his last three home appearances.

Inter Milan – Title hopes well and truly dashed following Bologna capitulation?

Any outside chance Inter Milan (3rd – W19 D7 L4) may have had of clawing their way back into the Serie A title reckoning has essentially diminished following Sunday’s dramatic defeat at the San Siro at the hands of ten-man Bologna. The Nerazzurri were also reduced to ten men, but only after they had taken the lead, missed a penalty, and then conceded a equalising goal to a dogged away side who would go on to seal a memorable 2-1 success.

Quite how Inter lost to Bologna is mystifying considering their lead, the abundance of chances they created to score more, as well as their numerical advantage for a significant part of the game. Ultimately it leaves them 11 points adrift of leaders Juventus, and only one better off than Atalanta in fourth who will climb above Antonio Conte’s men with victory at home to Sampdoria the previous night.

So there could be even greater pressure on Inter coming in the game, and we all know how poorly they’ve handled that this season. Yet their form since the restart hasn’t been all bad, with three wins and a draw to go with the aforementioned loss, while no team in Serie A this season has averaged more points away from home (2.29 – W10 D2 L2) than a Nerazzurri side whose only losses on the road have come against Lazio and Juventus.

Verona Vs Inter Milan Betting Advice

There is no threat of Inter Milan missing out on the top-four, and they are highly unlikely to mount a comeback in the title race. Arguably, then, this fixture matters more to the hosts, who know they must make up ground on AC Milan in seventh to put themselves back into contention for a Europa League berth. Five wins in six home games, one of which against runaway leaders Juventus, certainly bodes well for Verona‘s chances against a potentially forlorn Inter.

Verona Vs Inter Milan – Key Facts

  • One defeat in seven home Serie A games now for Verona, who have scored at least two goals on six occasions during this run apart from the 2-0 loss to Napoli.
  • Four of the five Serie A games Inter Milan have featured in since the restart contained a minimum of three goals, with both team scoring in four.
  • Verona last recorded a Serie A victory over Inter Milan in 1992, with Inter victorious on four of their most recent five visits to Verona.

Inter Milan’s away record this season merits the utmost respect, though. Inter have netted in all five fixtures since the restart but also conceded in four. That trend should continue in Verona where the hosts have been in excellent form since the turn of the year,  scoring at least once in nine of the last ten home fixtures – seven of which featured both teams among the goals.
