Verona Preview – Can Di Francesco find his first league win in charge of Verona against the champions?
The Eusebio Di Francesco era at Verona got off to a losing start after a 3-2 loss at home to Sassuolo on the opening weekend. There is some irony in that as Di Francesco enjoyed so much success at last week’s opponents for the five years he was in charge. In truth they were well beaten with a last minute goal giving the score line some more credibility. Di Francesco will be demanding a reaction and better overall performance even if it doesn’t end with points.
Mattia Zaccagni got both goals in last week’s defeat and will be looking for a best ever return in terms of scoring. Last season was his most prolific with five goals so it looks possible he can better that this campaign.
Verona finished in 10th last season and that is a more than acceptable placing for a club of their size. Any improvement on that looks unlikely but the key is ensuring they avoid being dragged into a relegation battle. The league looks even more competitive this season and they are now 10 games without a win in Serie A stretching back to the beginning of April.
Di Francesco was able to celebrate a win in the Coppa Italia. His new squad brushed aside Catanzaro of Serie C 3-0. They face Empoli in the next round but that game doesn’t take place until December.
Inter Milan Preview – Will Inter’s excellent record against this opponent continue?
Inter may be down a couple of players from last year’s title-winning campaign but there were no signs of any downturn in quality or ability when dominating Genoa last weekend. A 4-0 win for Simeone Inzaghi’s men sent out a warning to the rest of Serie A that they are still extremely capable and will be looking to retain their place at the top.
Debut goals for Hakan Calhanoglu and Edin Dzeko capped a perfect win for the champions but they know tougher tests await and the sale of Romelu Lukaku is no doubt going to weaken them somewhat longer term. Lukaku was the best player in the division last season and scored 24 goals en route to the club’s first title in a decade.

The other notable change is of course the head coach. Antonio Conte has moved on and Inzaghi – who was so consistent in his five years with Lazio – is entrusted with bringing more success to Inter.
Inter lost just two away games on the road last season which indicates how consistent they were. With Juventus, Milan and Napoli all likely to be stronger again this season you feel they’re going to have to show a similar level of performance if they are to win the title again.
