Preview: Pressure is mounting on Thursday’s visitors to the Energi Viborg Stadion, where hosts Viborg retain a perfect record of five wins thus far this season. The Danish outfit will do extremely well to make that six, though, even against this off colour West Ham side.

Viborg – Danish side staring at third straight loss?

Danish side Viborg gave a creditable account in London, even grabbing a second-half consolation goal through Jacob Bonde Jensen whose header looped over Alphonso Areola in the West Ham goal. The team of Jacob Friis weren’t shy in getting forward when the opportunity presented itself, and actually finished the first leg having only one fewer attempt on goal (8) than their more illustrious opponents.

Bridging that two-goal deficit won’t be easy, though, even with home advantage now in their favour. Their confidence will have also been dented further following a 1-0 loss away to Randers three days later, a result which leaves them sixth (W3-D0-L3) in the 12-team Danish Superliga. Their form at home, however, has been excellent this season, recording five wins from five and winning both European qualifiers here ‘to nil’.

Key Stat: To reach this stage, Viborg have had to overcome Lithuanian and Faroese opponents, defeating Suduva 2-0 on aggregate and B36 Torshavn 5-1.

West Ham – Goals still proving elusive?

The Hammers simply aren’t hitting the mark so far this season. Sunday’s 2-0 home defeat to Brighton made it three Premier League games without a win or a goal scored as the euphoria of last season’s sixth place league finish and semi-final run in the Europa League quickly feels like a distant memory. Exiting Europe, therefore, truly would be a disaster of epic proportions under the circumstances.

David Moyes’ side only lost two of their six away matches (W3 D1) in Europe last term, losing 1-0 to Sevilla and Frankfurt. There were wins against Dinamo Zagreb, Rapid Vienna and Lyon, with all three coming by way of a clean sheet. Declan Rice and Aaron Cresswell are both available after serving suspensions in the first leg, and that pair should help ensure serene progress into the UECL group stage out in Denmark.

Key Stat: Each of West Ham’s last four away matches in Europe have seen only one team score (W2 L2), while only one of their past seven away matches in all competition would result in both teams finding the net.

Viborg Vs West Ham Betting Advice

After an underwhelming start to the domestic season, the last thing David Moyes and West Ham need is a dramatic conclusion to this second leg. The return of Declan Rice to midfield should shore them up as they look to close out the tie from a winning position, while expect a rest for forward Michail Antonio who has looked well off the pace in the early stages. Gianluca Scammaca should spearhead the attack.

Viborg Vs West Ham – Key Facts:

  • In their first ever head-to-head meeting, West Ham produced a 3-1 victory in the first leg in what was, and still is, their only win of the season until this point.
  • Viborg sit sixth in the Danish Superliga standings (W3-D0-L3). They are hosting a West Ham who were bottom of the English Premier League at the time of writing, after beginning 2022-23 with three consecutive ‘to nil’ defeats.
  • Only one team has scored in all three of West Ham’s league games this season, five of their six away from home in Europe last season, and four of the previous six competitive games of Viborg.

A big money signing from Sassuolo over the summer, Scammaca would open the scoring last week on his first start for the club. Jarrod Bowen, the club’s standout player last season, added another from range, but in truth West Ham didn’t cause Viborg all that many problems despite scoring three times. So I am happy siding against goals here. All but one of the Hammers six away matches last season didn’t produce BTTS.
