Tuesday night brings us the second legs of the first round qualifying matches in the Champions League, and my next pick features Hungarian outfit, Videoton, taking on Luxembourg side, Dudelange, at their Puskás Akadémia Pancho Aréna.
Videoton secured a valuable 1-1 draw away in Luxembourg in last week’s first leg draw at Dudelange, and they’ll now be looking to press home their advantage in this second leg to progress to the next qualifying round.
Videoton had played five pre-season games prior to last week’s first qualifying round match and had lost just once which was away at Croatian club, Osijek, but wins over Kapfenberger, Sturm Graz and Cukaricki will no doubt have helped in their preparations here.
Onto Dudelange, and I can’t help feeling that the visitors were ‘underdone’ prior to their first round qualifying first leg last week as they hadn’t arranged any pre-season games beforehand, and although they went into last week’s encounter on the back of an impressive 10-match winning streak domestically, this competition is a definite step up in quality.
Dudelange’s apparent lack of preparation is mystifying as they’ve now gone ten matches without a win in the Champions League, while their away record is pretty poor, having lost their last five away ties on the trot, scoring 4 goals and conceding 15 in reply.
In addition, Dudelange have failed to score in each of their last three away ties against Ludogorets, Qarabag and APOEL, and they could face further disappointment on Tuesday night in Hungary.
Dudelange’s overall pedigree away from home in this competition is quite woeful, having lost 12 of their 17 away matches in total.
This should therefore be a comfortable home win for Videoton here…
