Following the resumption of the La Liga season, it was a successful return to action in the Spanish top flight for Villarreal as they registered a 1-0 win away from home at Celta Vigo which not only ended a run of three straight defeats, but also maintains their outside chance of claiming a top six finish.
Villarreal are now five points adrift of 6th placed Atletico Madrid but this upcoming fixture on Tuesday evening sees them host third from bottom strugglers, Mallorca, and Villarreal will be eager to record another three points here and put pressure on the teams above them.
The earlier defeats were against Atletico Madrid, Athletic Bilbao and Leganes, but their overall home record stands at a reasonable looking 6-4-3 26/17 and having won three of their last five at their Estadio de la Cerámica, Villarreal will fancy their chances of picking up maximum points in this tussle.
Mallorca Preview – Can Mallorca move out of bottom three?
If they’re to do so, Mallorca will have to achieve what they’ve failed to do on the previous eight occasions against Villarreal, and that’s to beat their hosts in their own backyard; indeed, Mallorca’s previous triumph at the Estadio de la Cerámica was way back in 2003 with a 2-0 win, but the modern day brought a heavy 4-0 defeat at home to Barcelona on the weekend.
