Villarreal Preview – Emery seeking fifth straight home success?

Unai Emery already looks at home upon returning to Spain. Following turbulent spells in France and England with PSG and Arsenal, respectively, the 49-year-old has quickly set about improving a Villarreal outfit who were part of the top four conversation for much of the last campaign – only for their form to unravel down the home stretch, losing three of their final five fixtures to finish a  respectable fifth.

Nine games into 2020/21 and Real Sociedad are the only side with more wins and points to their name than Emery’s Yellow Submarine (W5 D3 L1), and with the Basque outfit not involved until the following day, Villarreal have the added incentive of knowing victory will see them climb atop La Liga for 24 hours at least. For that to occur, they must overcome an old adversary.

Villarreal have registered one win against Real Madrid across nine previous league meetings (W1 D4 L4), and are winless in four (D3 L1) here at Estadio de la Ceramica since 1-0 success in December 2015. However, this is a side in inspired form currently, particularly at home where they are enjoying their longest winning sequence in La Liga, with four successive wins, since the autumn of 2016.

Real Madrid Preview – Zidane must contend with injury crisis?

Los Blancos entered the international break in disarray, having lost 4-1 away to a Valencia side stripped of their prized assets during the summer. That match will forever be remembered for the concession of three penalties, which were merely compounded by Raphael Varane’s comical own goal, as Real slumped to their second league defeat of 2020/21 to leave them four points adrift of La Liga leaders Real Sociedad.

A hugely significant fixture in Italy awaits in midweek meanwhile, travelling to Inter Milan ideally needing to win to enhance their faltering prospects of qualification for the latter stages. So this is a critical juncture in the season for Zinedine Zidane and Real Madrid, whose long list of absentees already include Eden Hazard but may now feature both centre-backs, Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane.

Furthermore, Karim Benzema is still rated doubtful after picking up a knock last time out at the Mestalla. Therefore, Villarreal away is hardly ideal, not least because Real are winless in three visits (D3). Yet this was a side, albeit one that had more first-team players available than they do now, that went to Barcelona last month and won 3-1 and boasts a tidy enough away record (W3 D1 L1) in the league this season.

Villarreal Vs Real Madrid Betting Advice

Should Villarreal be considered genuine title contenders? This season’s La Liga looks as wide open as ever, so it would be foolish to dismiss the chances of a team that has made a better start than most. Victory over Real Madrid, albeit one that looks set to be missing a whole host of key players, would be a serious statement of intent. It would also extend their winning run here at home to five La Liga games.

Villarreal Vs Real Madrid – Key Facts:

  • Villarreal have won four of their five La Liga home games this season, including the last four in a row, with both teams scoring in all but one.
  • Both teams have scored in three of Real Madrid‘s last four away La Liga games, while they have scored two or more in three of their five away league games in 2020/21 (W3 D1 L1).
  • Each of the last three La Liga meetings in Villarreal ended 2-2, with the hosts winless in four head-to-head encounters since a 1-0 victory in 2015.

Real Madrid were a shambles in their most recent La Liga outing, looking alarmingly exposed at the back and not for the first time this season. They have since lost Eden Hazard and potentially Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane to injury, among others, which only makes them more vulnerable here. Therefore Villarreal, who have lost this fixture once at home in the last five seasons, are worth backing Draw No Bet.
