It’s the final round of games for the 2018/19 Premier League season and whilst attention will be on who wins the title, Watford and West Ham will be happy with their own campaigns and looking to finish off on a high.

Watford Preview

Watford’s big game will be next weekend as they bid to spring a massive upset and defeat Manchester City in the final of the FA Cup, that is clearly their main objective for what’s left of this season. That said, the Hornets have had such a positive season in terms of their league form that they will want to finish off with a positive result – especially as they close out their campaign at home. The other consideration for Javi Gracia is that a win could yet see Watford finish as high as eighth, which would represent their highest ever finish in the Premier League. Conversely, if they lose tomorrow then they would forego their first ever top half finish and replace opponents West Ham in 11th. It may well seem like semantics, but a top-ten finish would be significant and anything higher would represent a really successful season for all at Vicarage Road. Plus, there’s the small matter of increased prizemoney the higher they finish. It will be interesting to see what sort of team the home manager puts out with that massive encounter with City just six days away. The temptation to rest players is obvious but having failed to win any of their last three games it’s also not ideal to go into that match without a confidence-boosting performance and win.

West Ham Preview

It may not have been the best of starts for West Ham under Manuel Pellegrini but there are definite signs of progression throughout the course of the campaign and there is good cause for Hammers fans to be looking ahead to next year with some confidence. There has been no suggestion of being involved in a relegation battle – which is an improvement on last season – and a win on Sunday would definitely guarantee them a top 10 finish, whilst they could yet see them rise further. Had Pellegrini been offered that when joining the club last summer, he surely would have taken it. The may have lost five of their 14 games but three of those defeats have came against teams in the top six with the only game they would have been disappointed not to get a result from would be the defeat away to Cardiff in early March. Other than that, the end to their season has been strong and they come into Sunday’s game on the back of successive wins away to Tottenham and at home to Southampton last week, both of which are impressive for different reasons. A win tomorrow would see them record three consecutive league wins for just the second time this season.

Key-Facts – Watford v West Ham

  • These two clubs have enjoyed good seasons and Watford have the FA Cup final to look forward to next weekend
  • Watford require a draw to guarantee a top-10 finish whilst West Ham can leapfrog their opponents with a win
  • Eight of Watford’s last 11 home matches have ended with both teams scoring and both teams average well over 2.5 goals a game

Watford v West Ham Betting Advice

London derbies are rarely dull affairs and there is a local rivalry of sorts in this one which should see the game being played at a decent tempo. For the reasons outlined above there are a number of reasons why both Watford and West Ham will be keen to get the points tomorrow and avoid this being an end-of-season mid-table contest. It was the Hornets who took the spoils the last time these two teams met just before Christmas so the visitors will also be out for some revenge on Sunday.

One thing that cannot be levelled at either of these teams is any lack of intent or desire to play on the front foot and that’s evidenced by the lack of clean sheets for both teams throughout the season – just seven each in 37 matches. That bodes well for this game and one where the circumstances and league position of both should also mean there are plenty of opportunities in an open game. Ten of Watford’s 17 home matches have seen both teams scoring, including eight of the last 11 and with the visitors in good scoring form of late that’s a trend I can see continuing tomorrow. However, with the prohibitive odds the selection is for both teams to score and there to be over 2.5 goals in the game.
