Preview: The search for a first win – or goal for that matter – resumes at Vicarage Road for Wolves this weekend. The home side will clearly have other ideas, though, with Watford bidding to extend their club-record ten successive home league wins.

Watford – More home glory for Vicarage Road faithful?

Xisco Munoz could not have wished for a better start to his maiden Premier League campaign as Watford manager, seeing his promoted side race into a 3-0 lead at home to Aston Villa first time out. The Hornets’ early buzz would not last very long, though. After clinging on in that fixture, a 3-2 scoreline earning them a first top-flight victory since July 2020, they have lost successive league games without scoring.

It didn’t help that they were on the road on both occasions. And while there were scant few positive to be gleaned from the 2-0 reverse at Brighton, there were encouraging signs in their 1-0 loss to league leaders Tottenham before the break. The xG values from that particular match (1.19 – 0.67) might beg to differ, but Watford had their moments going forward and were only undone by a fluke free-kick.

So there really shouldn’t be any cause for alarm ahead of returning to the scene of their gameweek one exploits. Vicarage Road has become something of a fortress as well, reeling off ten straight league wins whilst conceding only three. All but the Villa game came in the division below but it is a formidable sequence all the same. Earning a 2-1 win the last time these clubs faced off in Hertfordshire.

Wolves – Wanders to break their scoring duck?

Are Wolverhampton Wanderers this season’s Brighton? Last season, Graham Potter’s men were renowned for consistently not coming good on their superb underlying numbers. This time around it is Bruno Lage’s side assuming the role as the division’s early underachievers. Narrowly losing their first three league games – all via the same 1-0 scoreline – despite recording more shots than the opposition in all three.

Liverpool and Man City are the only sides to have more shots so far than the 57 of Wolves. Adama Traore and Raul Jimenez are the main culprits. The pair are ranked amongst the division’s top five for shots per game, with an average of four. Opta also inform us that the attacking duo have created more chances for each other than anyone else in the league. So when it does eventually go in, it will likely be one of these two.

Perhaps a trip to Vicarage Road is what is needed. As while they did fall to a 2-1 defeat on their most recent league visit, in January 2020, they did win the previous two. That is as many as they managed in thirteen previous visits to Hertfordshire (D4 L7). However, this would require Wanderers winning away from home for the first time since April, doing so twice in their last fifteen attempts (D5 L8).

Watford Vs Wolves Betting Advice

With Watford enjoying their longest-ever winning home run in league competition, currently ten after beating Aston Villa 3-2 in their sole outing at Vicarage Road since their promotion back to the Premier League, the hosts are possibly being underrated this weekend. They have only conceded three times during this long winning run, and now meet a Wolves team that is yet to score a league goal this term.

Watford Vs Wolves – Key Facts:

  • Between them these teams haven’t managed a goal in five of six Premier League games this season. Although Watford did score three in their only home fixture so far.
  • Wolves will be confident of ending their barren spell in front of goal at Vicarage Road though, having netted there on each of their last six visits in all competitions.
  • Then again, this is a Watford side enjoying their longest-ever winning home run in the league, with eight of ten victories during this sequence being ‘To Nil’.

Results only tell a partial story, though, with Wolves incredibly unfortunate to lose all of their first three matches to the league season. They’ve played some exciting, attacking football so far under a new manager and were easily the better side last time out against Manchester United. Until the ball starts hitting the back of the net though, placing much faith in them finally delivering seems risky.
