Wehen Preview – Survival dependent on turning home form around?

A third-ever appearance in Germany’s second tier for Wehen Wiesbaden (16th – W6 D7 L12, GF31 GA43). The club finished a respectable 8th first time around, in 2007/08, before finishing in stone last the following season resulted in them spending the subsequent ten years in the third division. That was where the club appeared to be heading once more, having struggled for much of their 2. Bundesliga reappearance this term.

However, a 6-2 win away at Osnabruck in March, immediately prior to the enforced pause due to COVID-19, was as much a surprise as it was emphatic. Wehen were bottom of the standings at the time after enduring five winless matches (D2 L3) in which only three goals were scored, only to remarkably double that output in a single outing as a Manuel Schaffler hat-trick inspired easily their biggest victory of the campaign thus far.

Instead of bouncing into the next fixture, football was abruptly suspended. Manager Rudiger Rehm will task his players with building on that stunning March result, although the 41 year-old might be in for disappointment. Wehen have an atrocious record (W2 D4 L6, GF11 GA24) at home this season – the worst of all teams in the division, in fact – failing to record a win at their BRITA-Arena over any of the current top-seven: D4 L2, GF7 GA13.

Stuttgart Preview – Promotion bid could falter on away struggles?

Bouncing between the top two divisions in recent times, Stuttgart (2nd – W13 D6 L6, GF41 GA28) are seeking a swift return to the top tier after shockingly losing their place in the Bundesliga last season on the back of defeat to Union Berlin in a relegation/promotion play-off. A swift return is on the cards though. The team are prominent in second, with the top-two earning automatic promotion.

Stuttgart went up as champions the last time they were at this level in 2016-17. Repeating the same trick will ultimately be this team’s aim although catching leaders Bielefeld, boasting a healthy six point buffer, won’t be easy especially with Hamburg breathing down their necks in third and only a point worse off. Only three points on Sunday, in what looks one of the more forgiving assignments left on the agenda, will do therefore.

Yet the omens are not particularly positive. Their relative success up until now has largely been built on their home form, which ranks as the best in the league. That form drops off a cliff, though, when pressed to travel, ranking as only the tenth-best away outfit after winning only a quarter of their twelve such games so far (W3 D5 L4). A 1-0 success at Bochum in mid-February represents their sole win in the last eight away encounters (W1 D3 L4).

Wehen Vs Stuttgart Betting Advice

A quick glance at the current 2. Bundesliga standings will tell us Wehen are fighting for survival whereas Stuttgart are flying high in second. However, neither excel in their respective home and away matches this season, making highlighting a potential winner tricky. Wehen avoided defeat when at home in four of their six meetings with the other top-seven sides, however, while Stuttgart’s 3 wins from 12 away outings suggest they are uneasy favourites for this.

Wehen Vs Stuttgart Key Facts

  • With a record in home fixtures this season that reads W2 D4 L6, no team in Germany’s second tier has a poorer record at home than Wehen.
  • Of their 13 victories earned in this season’s 2. Bundesliga, only three were recorded away from home by Stuttgart (W3 D5 L4).
  • All three match goals were netted inside the opening 20 minutes when these sides met on Matchday 9, with Wehen producing a shock 2-1 win in Stuttgart.

Wehen also won the reverse fixture 2-1 in October. Wehen or Draw is 6/5 with Betfair. Alternatively, bank on goals. Stuttgart are hardly reliable on their travels but have still netted in 75% of away games this season. No team has scored fewer at home than the 11 of Wehen; however, three of their four meetings with teams in 1st-5th delivered both teams scoring.
