Werder Bremen – More toil in store inside Westerstadion?

Goalscoring opportunities were sparse over the weekend, at least from the perspective of the visitors, as Werder Bremen (W2 D5 L4) were soundly beaten at the Red Bull Arena in a 2-0 loss to an RB Leipzig side who would provisionally climbed up into second with their seventh Bundesliga win of the campaign. Five more than Florian Kohfeldt’s charges have so far managed, going their past eight matches without victory.

As a direct consequence of their recent travails, Die Werderaner have fallen to 13th in the standings and within four points of the relegation play-off. The RB Leipzig reverse making it no win in eight (D5 L3) since a slender success at home to newly-promoted Arminia Bielefeld on Matchday 3, while it was also a third successive defeat following disappointing outcomes against high-flying duo Stuttgart and Wolfsburg.

In many respects, then, Werder Bremen have been rather unfortunate with their recent spate of fixtures. Unfortunately, there is to be no let up in intensity until after this midweek fixture with a wounded Borussia Dortmund at the earliest. Bremen, who boast one win and just five goals scored from five Bundesliga home games (W1 D2 L2) in 2020/21, have won only one of the pair’s past eleven league meetings (W1 D3 L7).

Borussia Dortmund – Favre paid price for Stuttgart debacle?

There was a sense of inevitability about the news that broke Sunday afternoon. The alarm bells had been ringing for a while, in fairness. Defeat to Bayern last month all felt rather predictable despite an encouraging performance, but the loss immediately after to a previously winless in 18 FC Koln was inexplicable. A draw in Frankfurt and an humiliating 5-1 scoreline at Signal Iduna Park later and Lucien Favre is gone.

Standards have undoubtedly slipped this season. They have already lost four times in the league, three more than joint-leaders Bayern and RB Leipzig, and their recent run of one win in five (W1 D1 L3), culminating in Saturday’s shocker against Stuttgart, has seen them fall five points off the title pace. Hardly an insurmountable margin, however, it could prove a struggle getting through to Christmas.

Dortmund (W6 D1 L4) are already shorn of their talisman up top, with Haaland not expected back anytime soon, and have seen both form and performances collapse. Across their last five league games they have failed to record a single shutout – they kept five in their opening six fixtures – and conceded thirteen. Their only solace, meanwhile, comes in their handy away record (W3 D1 L1), going unbeaten since September.

Werder Bremen Vs Borussia Dortmund Betting Advice

We should be in for an open encounter at Westerstadion, where all but one of the five Bundesliga games held there this season have featured goals for both sides. This despite Werder Bremen managing no more than five goals at home in total, netting exactly one goal 100 per cent of the time on their own patch thus far. I don’t see that trend bucking here as Dortmund are shipping goals left, right and center right now.

Werder Bremen Vs Borussia Dortmund – Key Facts:

  • A 2-0 defeat in their most recent Bundesliga contest, away at RB Leipzig, extended Werder Bremen’s winless league run to eight matches (D5 L3), losing the last three.
  • It is one win in five league outings for Borussia Dortmund (W1 D1 L3) following Saturday’s 5-1 humbling at the hands of Stuttgart.
  • Dortmund are unbeaten in their last four away league games, though, and last lost here in Bremen in 2014 – prevailing on three of five visits in the league thereafter.

Dortmund do prefer playing away, it seems, having taken ten of the last twelve available points on the road compared to none of the last nine at home. Moreover, their hosts continue to struggle in Bremen having won here once all season and only twice throughout the whole of 2019/20. But can the Black and Yellows be trusted after the weekend’s debacle? The safer bet would be both teams locating the net.
