Werder Bremen Preview – Bundesliga survival no longer rests in their hands?

Regardless of what happens elsewhere in the German capital, where a massive favour from Hertha Berlin is needed in their fixture with Fortuna Dusseldorf, the equation at Weserstadion is relatively simple: Werder Bremen (17th – W7 D7 L19) have to beat FC Koln. A hefty price will be paid should Florian Kohfeldt’s charges fail to do so, potentially joining Paderborn through the Bundesliga trapped door and into the second tier.

There is a scenario whereby Bremen would avoid the drop with a five goal margin of victory but only should Dusseldorf only draw on the road at Hertha. That would be an extraordinary conclusion to what has been an underwhelming league campaign until now, and it would also be very speculative predicting such. The Green-Whites have only managed seven wins all season and of those, six were by a single goal.

Even a victory is far from a guarantee. At home this season, Werder Bremen have been victorious only once – a 3-2 success over Augsburg on 1 September – registering the least points (6) and goal scored (9) of anyone. They are currently fourteen home Bundesliga games without a win, losing no fewer than eleven, and have netted one goal across their last ten matches at Weserstadion.

FC Koln Preview – Billy Goats keen to end decent season on winning note?

The Billy Goats have long been safe from any threat of relegation, surging clear of the bottom three courtesy of some stunning form sustained from December right through to March when earning nine wins in eleven games. Unfortunately for coach Markus Gisdol, though, it has lead to his team largely coasting through these past few weeks since football returned.

It is now nine games without a Bundesliga win for FC Koln (14th – W10 D6 L17), who have featured on eight occasions since the resumption but are still to register a win (D4 L4). The latest a score draw in Cologne with Eintracht Frankfurt. Florian Kantz’s converted penalty in that fixture would, however, extend a fairly remarkable streak which has seen The Billy Goats net on at least one occasion in each of their previous nineteen Bundesliga games.

The latter sequence will want to be extended on the final day. A refreshing final day in which there will be no overwhelming sense of anxiety, with Bundesliga safety already assured. Instead they can potentially play an influential role in who ultimately goes down. And, according to Opta, Koln have registered more points versus Bremen than any other side bar Schalke, suggesting the visitors are primed to have a big say in this season’s relegation battle.

Werder Bremen Vs FC Koln Betting Advice

For Werder Bremen and their hopes of climbing into the Bundesliga relegation play-off, it all comes down to beating FC Koln at home and hoping Dusseldorf are beaten in the capital by Hertha. Having won only once at home all season, scoring one goal in their last ten said fixtures, even the first part of that equation feels a stretch. FC Koln aren’t in the best of form, though, failing to win in nine, but do have a knack of scoring.

Werder Bremen Vs FC Koln – Key Facts

  • Not since a 3-2 scoreline against FC Augsburg on Matchday 3 have Werder Bremen registered a home win in the Bundesliga – they are 14 home games without a win (D3 L11).
  • FC Koln have failed to win any of their eight fixtures (D4 L4) since the Bundesliga restart but would score at least once in their last 19 top flight games.
  • This season’s previous meeting ended 1-0 in favour of FC Koln, who have tasted defeat away to Werder Bremen on just one occasion in four previous visits (W1 D2 L1).

The end feels inevitable for Bremen, who have only scored two goals on two occasions at home this season but may have to do so here versus a Koln outfit bidding to score for a 20th consecutive Bundesliga match. The hosts are far too short, though, with bookies sensing their sheer desperation might lead to a rare victory here. I’m not so sure.
