Preview: With just one win inside their Weserstadion all season, Werder Bremen have an outstanding opportunity to double that tally on Sunday when the Bundesliga’s bottom side, Paderborn, pay them a visit in front of the BT Sports cameras.

Werder Bremen Preview – Wherever Bremen go, goals often flow?

In becoming only the second team to win at Wolfsburg this season when edging a thoroughly entertaining contest 3-2 last weekend, Werder Bremen (13th – W3 D5 L5, GF22 GA28) ended a lengthy sequence without victory that spanned eight Bundesliga matches (D3 L5). In fact it was only their third of the entire campaign, and a first since the middle of September, so it could turn out to be fairly significant should coach Florian Kohfeldt manage to build on something of a rare success.

Regardless of whether The River Islanders kick on from here or not, the one thing that can normally be guaranteed with this side is goals. Games involving them this season have been averaging close to four a game (3.85), and while that does drop ever so slightly when at home (3.50) there is no doubt that Bremen are blockbuster. The five goals that were shared at the Volkswagen Arena a week ago being a ninth successive game to feature goals for both them and the opposing team.

The latter statistic goes some way to highlighting where Werder Bremen have been going wrong this season: a porous defence that hampers any efforts made by the attackers, who clearly know their way to goal. Only the current top-six have netted more often than their 22 from 13 games. However, just two teams – one being Sunday’s opponents Paderborn – have shipped more at the other end than their staggering tally of 28 (that is over two per game!).

Paderborn Preview – Rock-bottom but still capable?

Alread written off in some quarters of the German media, and for good reason it seems. This has been a brutal return to the Bundesliga – only the club’s second ever stint in Germany’s top tier – for Paderborn (18th – W1 D2 L10, GF16 GA32) after losing ten of thirteen matches thus far. Their only win, meanwhile, coming against Fortuna Dusseldorf (2-0). Unsurprisingly, they prop up the table in stone last, six points adrift of the relegation play-off position that, at this moment in time, appears to be the limit of any ambitions.

After thirteen rounds in this season’s Bundesliga, no team has recorded more defeats (10) or conceded with more regularity (32) than Steffan Baumgart’s plucky charges, who quite simply look out of their depth at this level. Yet only on three occasions would they fail to score. Meanwhile draws away to Wolfsburg (1-1) and Borussia Dortmund (3-3), in contests they were given very little chance of doing much in, serve as a reminder of what this team can still offer us from time to time.

They almost pulled off something very similar last week. Conceding three times within the opening half-hour at home to title-challenging RB Leipzig, Paderborn stemmed the early flow of goals and even scored twice in the second-half, before ultimately falling to a 3-2 defeat. Another valiant effort. However, it would also provide another instance of them shipping three goals in a Bundesliga match – the second successive game this occurrence has happened, making it eight overall for the season.

Werder Bremen Vs Paderborn Key Facts:

  • Games involving Werder Bremen have averaged almost four goals per game (3.85), with their previous eight Bundesliga matches producing both teams to score.
  • Cut adrift at the bottom of the standings, Paderborn have lost 10 of 13 games thus far and have conceded a minimum of three goals on eight occasions.
  • This will mark only a third ever Bundesliga meeting between the two clubs: Bremen claimed four points from the previous two, winning 4-0 at home during 2014-15 season.

Betting Summary

Games simply won’t come any easier than this for Werder Bremen (8/15 Betfair), who have won only three times all season – and only once as hosts (W1 D2 L3) – but must surely be fancying their chances up against bottom-of-the-league Paderborn (19/4 Bet365). The latter have avoided defeat just three times so far this season, losing ten of thirteen overall, in what has been a chastening experience on their return to the top-flight.

Even though Bremen have struggled to win matches this season, especially at home, I was still surprised to see that their odds weren’t shorter. They’re not huge by any stretch of the imagination but Paderborn have been so poor that it is difficult foreseeing anything other than a home victory. If there are doubts surrounding the hosts, there shouldn’t be much regarding the prospect of goals. These two are among the poorest defences in the league, whilst both offer the promise of goals themselves.

Werder Bremen and Both Teams to Score might to be worth a bet at 6/4 (Betway), while it isn’t that surprising seeing Over 3.5 Goals trading at below evens (4/5 with Ladbrokes).
