Preview: Having drawn ten Bundesliga games between them this season, predicting who out of Werder Bremen or Stuttgart prevail on Sunday is anything but straightforward. The sides contested a 1-1 draw the last time they met inside Westerstadion, in February 2019, and a similar outcome is not unthinkable.

Werder Bremen Preview – Fascination with 1-1 scoreline consigned to history books?

Following a freakish obsession with drawing matches 1-1 came a glut of goals. Eight of them to be precise, of which Werder Bremen (W2 D5 L2) were culpable for only three as they ended up on the wrong side of a 5-3 scoreline away to Wolfsburg that was exhilarating as it was perplexing. With a combined xG that came to 2.27, it would be fair to say both sides truly outdid themselves inside the Volkswagen Arena.

An almost unprecedented run in the Bundesliga comprising five consecutive 1-1 draws had preceded last week’s thrilling spectacle, with the end result unfortunately being a first defeat in the league for manager Florian Kohfeldt and Werder Bremen since the opening game of the season. The Wolves snapping their seven-match unbeaten streak (W2 D5) which had seen them even avoid defeat on the road at Bayern.

Last season, Werder Bremen’s Weserstadion was a venue more advantageous to the visiting side; only relegated Paderborn collecting fewer points on their own patch in 2019/20 than Kohfeldt’s charges (8). This season, though, they have nearly matched that figure in just four home outings, going unbeaten against Bielefeld, Hoffenheim and Koln (W1 D2) since losing to Hertha Berlin on Matchday 1.

Stuttgart Preview – Bayern loss a minor setback?

In their last three league games, Stuttgart (W2 D5 L2) relinquished more points, seven, from winning positions than any other side in the Bundesliga. Die Schwaben were two goals to the good before half-time at home to Frankfurt, only to be pegged back to 2-2. They were then 2-1 up away at Hoffenheim, fell 3-2 behind after the break, before rallying late through defender Marc-Oliver Kempf who salvaged a 3-3 draw.

Whereas a point in each of those contests acted as a modicum of comfort for their inability to retain leads, there was to be no consolation last time out. Facing league leaders Bayern Munich was always going to be a daunting ask, but hopes of a famous result – they had previously won once in 20 Bundesliga and DFB Pokal meetings – soon started materialising when Tanguy Koulibaly had Stuttgart ahead on 20 minutes.

That lead would not even hold firm until the interval, Pellegrino Matarazzo’s men conceding twice before the break and again three minutes from time, as if for good measure, in a 3-1 scoreline which served to halt their seven-match run without defeat (W2 D5). Their immediate prospects regarding a similar run are positive, though; they are one of four teams yet to lose on the road in 2020/21 (W2 D2).

Werder Bremen Vs Stuttgart Betting Advice

It has been fourteen years and counting since Stuttgart last went to Bremen in the Bundesliga and left with maximum points. Since then, Werder Bremen have chalked up eleven matches unbeaten as hosts (W6 D5) – that currently their longest ongoing unbeaten run versus any side in the German top-flight – having been held to a 1-1 draw in the latest of them, in February 2019.

Werder Bremen Vs Stuttgart – Key Facts:

  • Both Werder Bremen and Stuttgart have scored on at least one occasion in all nine Bundesliga games in 2020/21.
  • Furthermore, both sides are now winless in five league outings after seeing their identical seven-game unbeaten runs (W2 D5) ended last time out.
  • Stuttgart have failed to win on their past eleven visits (D5 L6) to Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga, last departing Weserstadion victorious in September 2006.

I haven’t had much luck lately when it comes to draw predictions. However, this game, with both having drawn five of nine league games so far this season, screams potential stalemate. In addition, both Werder Bremen and Stuttgart have scored in all nine fixtures until now, leading both sides to put up 89% strike rates when it comes to both teams scoring in their respective league fixtures in 2020/21. Draw & Both Teams to Score appeals, therefore.
