Werder Bremen – Bundesliga survival hinges on overhauling dire home form?

Relegation is not something often associated with this club. Their last spell outside of the top tier was back in 1980-81. However, a drop down to the second level is becoming increasingly likely unless coach Florian Kohfeldt can mastermind a strong finish to the season that would defy much of what has gone before it, with Werder Bremen (17th – W6 D7 L15) remaining second from bottom after Wednesday’s 3-0 loss at home to Frankfurt.

Marginally the better side during the first half in midweek, it would be during the second period where Bremen fell apart completely, conceding three times without reply as their terrible record at Weserstadion this season continues. That a 12th consecutive Bundesliga home game without registering the victory (D3 L9 – failing to even score in eight), since edging out FC Augsburg 3-2 on Matchday 3 at the very beginning of September.

The situation feels bleak but not insurmountable. Both a relegation play-off spot and safety within three points, so they are potentially just a win from making serious inroads. For a team boasting six wins all season, though, winning is a lot easier said than done. Particularly at home, with nobody thus far accruing fewer points (6 from 42!), wins (1) or managing less goals scored (9, at a dismal rate of 0.64 per game) than The River Islanders.

Wolfsburg – Die Wolfe a force to be reckoned with on their travels?

Despite recording another disappointing result at their Volskwagen Arena last time out, Wolfsburg (6th – W11 D9 L9) remain well-placed to achieve their goal of qualifying for European competition for the second season running. Last weekend saw them beaten at home for the second straight match, however, undone late on by an Eintracht Frankfurt side that were previously enduring a six-game winless slump.

Thankfully, Wolfsburg’s frustrating tendency to go missing on their own patch is a problem for another day, with Oliver Glasner’s team on the road this weekend and looking to become the tenth visiting side to prevail at Weserstadion in 2019/20. Were they to do so, it would extend their unbeaten away run to six matches, having won three and drawn two of the last five. It would also mean three consecutive away victories for the first time since December 2018.

However, Die Wolfe don’t possess the healthiest of records versus Sunday’s opponents, with strong emphasis on recent times after no wins from their previous eight attempts (D2 L6). Even more damning is the fact they’ve not taken a point from any of the last four staged in Bremen, where it is four successive defeats – losing 2-0 in 2018/19 – since a 5-3 victory in March of 2015.

Werder Bremen Vs Wolfsburg Betting Advice

A big game for both, though arguably more so for the home side who need every point they can get at the moment in their battle to avoid relegation. The omens are encouraging: it has been more than five years since Wolfsburg have beaten Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga, losing six of eight meetings in this period. Conversely, Bremen are bidding to win for a fifth straight season as the home side, prevailing in last season’s corresponding fixture 2-0.

Werder Bremen Vs Wolfsburg – Key Facts

  • Since the Bundesliga resumption in mid-May, 17th-placed Werder Bremen (W2 D1 L2) have produced marginally more points than 6th-placed Wolfsburg (W2 L2).
  • Werder Bremen would fail to score in seven of the last eight league games staged at home, compared with Wolfsburg scoring two or more in five consecutive away matches.
  • This has proven a favourable fixture for Bremen, though, winning six and losing eight prior Bundesliga meetings – which includes winning the last four as hosts.

A word of caution, though. Home advantage is dubious right now, as stadiums remain a hollow existence in the absence of fans. Furthermore, Wolfsburg prefer playing on the road, winning four of the last five said matches whilst scoring at least twice in each. Alternatively, then, stick to goals: 10 of the last 12 Bundesliga head-to-heads producing both teams scoring, as did five of the most recent six staged in Bremen.
