The Championship playoffs rarely disappoint and Saturday’s first leg between Aston Villa and West Brom was no exception with goals, drama and controversy – lets hope for more of the same in tomorrow’s second leg.

West Brom Preview

It was all going so well for West Brom at Villa Park on Saturday having taken the lead in the first half and negotiating much of the game with minimal of fuss. The Baggies were the better team and would have been extremely disappointed to concede twice in the last 15 minutes, one of which was a penalty that they may feel had done by. To compound their misery, West Brom were reduced to 10 men in the closing stages following a second booking for Dwight Gayle, who had earlier opened the scoring. It was a debatable second booking but there is no way in which the club can appeal because it was two yellow cards meaning their top scorer will now be missing for the return game. Gayle has scored 24 goals in the Championship this season and is a huge loss, however Jay Rodriguez has scored just one less and the onus will now be on him to lead the line and provide the goals that get his team through this tie and moving on to Wembley.

Aston Villa Preview

There would have been more than a few nervous supporters within Villa Park for the majority of Saturday’s game and that seemed to transmit on to the park. It was a performance that showed the pressure these players and the whole club are under in their efforts to return to the Premier League – where the majority feel they should be playing. Having endured playoff heartache in the final 12 months ago, albeit under a different regime, will still be felt by a number of the players who are well aware of how marginal the differences are at this stage of the season. To their immense credit, Dean Smith’s team kept plugging away and were resilient enough to find a way to win in spite of playing below par and they now have the advantage as they make the short trip to the Hawthorns on Tuesday evening.

Key-Facts – West Brom v Aston Villa

  • This tie is finely poised after the first leg and both teams will feel they are capable of progressing on to Wembley
  • How vital Dwight Gayle’s sending off remains to be seen but any team would miss a striker who has scored 24 goals
  • West Brom have scored in all but one of their home games this season and 15 of them have contained at least three goals

West Brom v Aston Villa Betting Advice

There was never a chance that this tie was going to be settled after the first leg but the way in which it is poised at the moment could barely be more intriguing. Although Villa hold that narrow advantage, it was West Brom who looked the more composed and threatening throughout the game which bodes well for the second leg and playing in front of their own supporters. The one downside, however, is that they will be without the services of Gayle who has been such a big player for them throughout the whole campaign and his absence cannot be underestimated.

I expected goals in the first leg considering it featured two of the highest scorers in the Championship and although West Brom will be without their most prolific striker, there are plenty of threats throughout their team. It’s a game that Villa know they will have to be bold in in order to progress, and will be keen to be more productive in the final third than they managed on Saturday. The Baggies have failed to score in just one home game all season and Villa drawing a blank in only four of 23 away games. 15 of West Brom’s home games have went over 2.5 goals and it makes both teams to score and over 2.5 goals an obvious selection.
