West Brom would have enjoyed their break from the rigours of Premier League football in last weekend’s 2-0 win away at League Two side, Exeter City, as The Baggies ended a dismal run of 21 matches without a win in all competitions.
In addition, West Brom’s win over The Grecians became new manager, Alan Pardew’s first win at the club, and they’ll return to top flight action this Saturday with perhaps a sense of renewed confidence, despite sitting second from bottom but level on points with Swansea City.
However, this season’s trend seems to be against the home side here as they are without a win from their last 20 matches overall, and without a home win from their last 10. Indeed, you have to go all the way back to August and the opening fixture of the season for West Brom’s last win at The Hawthorns (v Bournemouth), amidst a poor record of 1-7-3 10/15.
Although FA Cup and League Cup involvement is lower on the list of priorities these days for most Premier League clubs, Brighton will come into this clash buoyed by their FA Cup third round 2-1 win at home against rivals Crystal Palace.
And following a run of three straight Premier League defeats to Liverpool, Huddersfield Town and Tottenham, The Seagulls have since lost just once in their subsequent five matches overall, which was a 2-0 loss at Chelsea. On the plus side, Brighton gained points in draws with Burnley, Newcastle United and Bournemouth, along with a 1-0 home win over Watford.
Brighton’s ‘area of opportunity’ though still centres around their ordinary form away from home where they hold a pretty ordinary record of 2-2-7 5/13, but it should be noted that three of their last five away matches were against top five clubs (Manchester United, Tottenham and Chelsea).
