West Brom – Big Sam influence still to be seen?

After succumbing to their 15th league defeat of the season last time out at Tottenham, and their seventh in the ten games that Sam Allardyce has taken charge of since replacing Slaven Bilic in December, West Brom (W2 D6 L15) spurned another opportunity to reduce the deficit on safety. Consequently the Baggies remain in 19th, a point above Sheffield United but, crucially, eleven adrift of 17th-placed Burnley.

Last week’s 2-0 scoreline in north London forced ‘Big Sam’ to concede that his side will need to beat a top team between now and the end of the season in order to avoid what is to some an inevitable return to the Championship. Fixtures against five of the current top seven in the table await before the season wraps up in May, starting with Man Utd at home. A fixture they boast one win from twelve attempts (W1 D2 L9).

Unless they can tighten up at the back, though, turning around their dire predicament is going to be near impossible, even for a manager renowned for keeping clubs in the Premier League against the odds. The Baggies are conceding 2.8 goals per game under ‘Big Sam’, a figure which rises to 3.8 when playing here at The Hawthorns, where they boast the worst home record in the top-flight (W1 D3 L7).

Manchester United – Away day specialists set to thrive?

As remarkable as it may seem, Manchester United (W13 D6 L4) last achieved a league double over West Brom ten seasons ago when still under the tutelage of Sir Alex Ferguson. It is a small feat current Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will hope to emulate on Sunday, after his team ran out narrow, though thoroughly deserved, 1-0 winners when these sides clashed at Old Trafford in mid-November.

United approach this weekend five points worse off than leaders Man City, but can extend their phenomenal away record should they avoid defeat. The Red Devils are unbeaten across their past eighteen away Premier League games (W13 D5). They are also the only team yet to lose a league game on their travels in 2020-21, all while averaging more points (2.45) and goals scored (2.18) than any other side.

Solskjaer admitted how much last week’s 3-3 draw at home to Everton hurt his team, throwing away leads of 2-0 and 3-2 to concede a last-gasp equaliser as United failed to secure maximum points for the third time in the past four league outings (W1 D2 L1). It showed in their midweek FA Cup tie with West Ham, requiring extra-time to see off uninspiring opposition on the night to book their place in the last-eight.

West Brom Vs Manchester United Betting Advice

If ever a team appear consigned to their fate, it is this West Brom side. There has been no shortage of desire in some of their recent displays, however, what they continue to lack is quality, along with the ability to remain focused and concentrated for the full 90 minutes. In each of their last two league games, the Baggies have gone in at half-time with their clean sheet in tact only to concede twice after the break and lose.

West Brom Vs Manchester United – Key Facts:

  • Since West Brom appointed Sam Allardyce as manager, the Baggies have collected 5 of a possible 30 points (W1 D2 L7) and conceding 2.8 goals per game.
  • No team has conceded more often in the Premier League this season than West Brom (54), while nobody has scored more times than Man Utd (49).
  • Manchester United are still unbeaten in 18 games away from home in the Premier League (W13 D5). Their 12 visits to West Brom have yielded nine wins (W9 D2 L1).

This is must win territory for Man Utd. Especially after seeing the side above them, Man City, cruise to victory here just a matter of weeks ago. West Brom have been beaten to nil in four of their five home games under Sam Allardyce, losing by 3+ goals each time, while all featured three or more goals. A comfortable outing is therefore expected for the team in second, up against the side second-from-bottom.
