West Brom Preview – Newfound resilience only taking them so far?

The search for a first league win of the campaign, since earning promotion from the Championship when finishing ten points worse off than Leeds in second, goes on after becoming the first visiting side to lose at Old Trafford this season. It was a contest ultimately decided by two penalty decisions: one that wasn’t given in their favour and one which went against them, the latter bringing about the only goal of the game.

Although Baggies manager Slaven Bilic was visibly upset with how last week panned out, namely the dubious officiating on show, he was nonetheless enthused with the performance from his team. There was certainly no shortage of commitment and endeavour as West Brom (D2 L7) conceded for just the fifth time in five league games, a massive improvement on the 13 shipped across their opening four fixtures.

Unfortunately, problems persist in the goalscoring department. Only Sheff Utd and Burnley (both 4) scoring fewer so far (6), while their average xG per game (0.6) is easily the worst in the Premier League. The Baggies have now scored once in their last six league outings – that a late equaliser at Brighton – and only once all season at home (D2 L2), where they were narrowly beaten by Spurs before the break.

Sheffield United Preview – Fine margins not falling their way?

At this same stage last season, Chris Wilder’s side had already begun their ascent up the Premier League table. They had just beaten Arsenal 1-0 at Bramall Lane to move onto twelve points and climb into ninth place. Such an impressive start upon their return to the top-flight helped lay the foundations for a comfortable season ahead, something they have not been able to achieve at the second time of asking.

Sheffield United (D1 L8) sit bottom of the pile through nine rounds of this later than scheduled league campaign, collecting two of 27 points available to them. They, along with opponents West Brom, are the only sides without a win, losing eight of nine fixtures thus far. The latest a 1-0 reverse at home to West Ham in what was another tight contest which didn’t fall their way, in sharp contrast to how last term unfolded.

The last time the club went their opening ten league games without a win was 1990-91, further highlighting the drastic nature of their season to date. Six of eight defeats were by a single goal, though, suggesting that with a little more luck on their side or, better still, some smarter finishing – no team has netted fewer than their four from 9.75 xG – they may have more to show for their efforts this season.

West Brom Vs Sheffield United Betting Advice

A true basement battle is about to ensue in the West Midlands. Neither side really deserve to be considered as the favourites, with both without a win all season, however, as hosts West Brom are priced up as such, despite losing three successive games whilst scoring once in the last six. They have fared better at home, though, earning draws with Chelsea and Burnley whilst pushing Spurs close in defeat last time.

West Brom Vs Sheffield United – Key Facts:

  • Should this match end in a draw, it will be only the third season in Premier League history in which two teams have gone their first ten fixtures without a win.
  • Six of the eight league defeats sustained by West Brom this season were to nil; however, Sheffield United remain the only side in the division yet to keep a clean sheet.
  • There has never been a Premier League meeting between these clubs until now, though Sheffield United did earn a 1-0 win on a visit to West Brom in the 2018/19 Championship season.

Sheffield United may share the honour of being winless but Chris Wilder’s men are out on their own when it comes to keeping clean sheets, with none recorded through nine games compared to the four they had at this same stage last season. Yet they’ve scored in each of the last three away outings, at Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool, and provided they can rediscover their old defensive steel, might need only one for success on Saturday evening.
