West Ham – Antonio return to make the difference?

The Hammers have lost their previous four encounters when facing a side for the very first time in the top-flight. It is an alarming trend which could make them vulnerable favourites this weekend, particularly with David Moyes speaking of the need for squad management following Thursday’s 2-0 victory here at London Stadium against Austrian outfit Rapid Vienna in the Europa League.

Declan Rice maintained his perfect scoring record in that competition, having scored in the 2-0 win away to Dinamo Zagreb in the opening match of the group. With progress in the EFL Cup – eye-catchingly dumping out Man Utd with a largely second string side after a 1-0 scoreline at Old Trafford – along with positive early strides in the league (7th – W3 D2 L1) and in Europe, West Ham should be full of confidence.

Furthermore, only Man City (34) and Tottenham (28) can boast of more points earned in Premier League home games this calendar year than David Moyes’ side (24). They were narrowly beaten last time out here, but were a David de Gea penalty save away from securing a deserved point. They were also missing top goalscorer Michail Antonio, who has three goals in two home league appearances so far this season.

Brentford – Bees already shown they can push the best?

Last Saturday evening, Thomas Frank and his team were holding the 2019-20 Premier League champions, Liverpool, to an enthralling 3-3 draw at Brentford Community Stadium. The Bees have therefore still lost only one league game since triumphing in the play-off final against Swansea City in May, conceding in stoppage time when going down 1-0 at home to Brighton in gameweek four.

Losing to the Seagulls remains their only competitive loss this season, sitting in the lofty heights of mid-table, in ninth place, ahead of the weekend’s Premier League action. Easing into the EFL Cup fourth round with ten goals scored against lower tier opponents. Meanwhile, they are yet to lose a Premier League away game (W1 D2), with only four teams ever doing so in their first four matches in the competition.

They will be further emboldened, then, by a run of one defeat in their last nine London league derbies (W5 D3). Among these include a 2-0 win and 1-1 draw at home to Arsenal and away to Crystal Palace, respectively, in their opening two fixtures. Ivan Toney may not have scored in either but has been unplayable at times, contributing two goals and as many assists across the past four league games.

West Ham vs Brentford Betting Advice

It is testament to the early work of Brentford that a team promoted to the Premier League for the first time last season, via the play-offs no less, are given a fighting chance of attaining a positive result Sunday. The Bees are actually unbeaten on their travels thus far, conceding once across three such matches (W1 D2), so could push a West Ham side possibly still reeling from last week’s 2-1 loss here to Man Utd.

West Ham Vs Brentford – Key Facts:

  • Between them these sides have lost one of seventeen competitive matches in 2021-22, suggesting Sunday’s affair could make for a competitive duel in East London.
  • Over 2.5 Goals and Both Teams Scoring has landed in all three West Ham home league games this season, but in none of Brentford’s three away league fixtures thus far.
  • Brentford did score three in a pulsating 3-3 draw at home to Liverpool last time out, though, so will be confident of finding the net in this all-London contest.

The home side must also contend with a much shorter turnaround, having turned out – successfully as well, defeating Rapid Vienna 2-0 at the London Stadium – in European competition on Thursday. All three West Ham home games this season featured a minimum of three goals but also both teams scoring. Meanwhile Brentford have notched in two of their three away so far and were a constant threat in last week’s 3-3 draw with Liverpool. So that is the bet: goals.
