West Ham – Another false start for Hammers?

The bottom of the Premier League table is looking stacked. Along with Everton and Manchester United, teams they share the relegation zone with, West Ham are one of three sides without a point so far this season, after following their 2-0 loss at home to Man City on the opening weekend with a 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest. Declan Rice missed a penalty in the latter, as if to compound their miserable start.

David Moyes would see his players churn out a first win of 2022-22 in midweek, a 3-1 success at the London Stadium against Danish side Viborg in the Europa Conference League, but it is in the league where they are keen to get off the mark. The Hammers have now won only one of nine top-flight matches (D2 L6) going back to April, and are winless across four previous outings in the competition as hosts (D2 L2).

Key Stat: West Ham have failed to score in their two league games so far this season, losing both. Only once before in their history have they opened a league campaign with three consecutive losses without scoring a single goal.

Brighton – Seagulls to thrive in the capital again?

The Seagulls were the headline makers on the opening weekend after going to Old Trafford and leaving with a famous victory over Manchester United. Although they couldn’t follow that success with another, last week’s goalless stalemate against Newcastle United did preserve their club-best run of form. Graham Potter’s side last lost a league fixture in April, going seven subsequent matches without defeat (W4 D3).

With Brighton yet to lose a Premier League meeting with West Ham, winning four of ten encounters, there is every likelihood this streak grows by the end of the weekend. Moreover, since the start of last season only last season’s top three of Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea have garnered more away points than Potter’s men, who would also win on their previous two visits to London (2-1 vs Arsenal, 1-0 vs Spurs).

Key Stat: Brighton haven’t lost any of six Premier League matches in London since the start of last season (W3 D3), a record only they can boast.

Moreover, it is seldom dull between the sides, with both teams scoring across all seven previous meetings.
