West Ham – Moyes’ men motivated for upset?
David Moyes claimed his side were “desperate to get back into Europe.” It certainly showed at Carrow Road last Sunday as the Hammers scored four unanswered goals against the Premier League’s bottom side, Norwich City. Michail Antonio ended his long goal drought while Jarrod Bowen became the first West Ham player since Paolo Di Canio to contribute 10 goals and as many assists in a single season by laying on two.
That win but also the performance is a massive boost, not only to their own confidence – particularly after losing recently in the semi-finals of the Europa League – but to their prospects of returning to Europe next term. Another this weekend, however unlikely it may seem, would see them climb Man Utd into sixth. For what it is worth, West Ham do boast home wins this season against both Chelsea and Liverpool.
Key Stat: Here at their London Stadium, West Ham can boast wins against teams currently second (Liverpool), third (Chelsea) and fifth (Tottenham). All three wins came via single-goal margins.
Manchester City – League leaders in unstoppable form?
Wednesday witnessed arguably one of the greatest midfield displays of the Premier League era as Kevin de Bruyne scored four (!), including a hat-trick inside the opening 24 minutes, in Man City’s 5-1 thrashing of Wolves at Molineux. Their response to losing the Champions League semi-final emphatic, scoring five in successive outings as they continue to close in on a fourth league title in five seasons.
Victory in midweek also saw Pep Guardiola’s side become the first ever to record five consecutive away league victories by a margin of at least three goals. Something they used to do regularly against Sunday’s opponents, winning by three or more goals in four successive Premier League visits to West Ham before a 1-1 draw last season. Four more points from their remaining two matches will see them crowned champions.
Key Stat: There have been three or more goals in Man City’s last eight matches in all competitions, with Man City responsible for scoring at least four in all but one of their previous six encounters.

West Ham Vs Manchester City Betting Advice
The result of this fixture was at one time merely a formality, as Man City grew accustomed to brushing aside the Hammers with consummate ease. However, recent encounters between the pair have been much more competitive. The margin across the last four meetings never being more than a single goal, with David Moyes’ men even claiming a penalty shootout success in the EFL Cup earlier in the season.
West Ham Vs Manchester City – Key Facts:
- Although they have only beaten West Ham once in their last four league and cup meetings, there hasn’t been a head-to-head victory for West Ham since their 2-1 league win at the Etihad in September 2015.
- Three of those recent four encounters saw both teams on the scoresheet. Each of the last four West Ham home games featured both teams scoring, but only one of Man City’s last six away.
- Jarrod Bowen has been involved in more Premier League goals in 2021-22 than any West Ham player, moving on to 10 goals and 10 assists after laying on two of his team’s strikes in their midweek win at Norwich.
Although they are no longer being disgraced in this fixture, it is still almost seven years since West Ham’s last head-to-head win against Man City. Home wins this season against the second and third best teams in the league, both via 3-2 scorelines, should give them some belief. But this is Man City – a team in imperious form, scoring goals at will and determined to end 2021-22 with at least the Premier League trophy.
