Preview: Unbeaten in a home Premier League game since the first week of the season, will West Ham become the first team in 2020/21 to prevent Manchester United from winning on their travels? Recent precedent suggest this could well be the case, the Hammers prevailing in each of the past two seasons here at the London Stadium.

West Ham Preview – Hammers can establish early advantage?

After edging out Aston Villa 2-1 at London Stadium on Monday, in a result that was fortuitous according to Infogol (xG: WHA 0.59 – 2.72 AVI), West Ham (W5 D2 L3) climbed several places into fifth and will come into a Premier League fixture with Manchester United above them in the table for only the fourth time. On the three previous instances this happened, however, the Hammers have drawn once and lost the other two.

David Moyes was fairly honest in his assessment of the performance last time out, describing it as ‘not very good’. The bulk of the decisions that night certainly rolled in their favour, benefiting from the visitors seeing a late penalty crash against the crossbar and an even later strike chalked off by VAR. It did, however, mark their third consecutive league victory, following 1-0 wins over Fulham and Sheffield United.

The last time West Ham registered four successive Premier League wins was December 2018, but they have won both of the last two top-flight meetings when hosting Manchester United, who have conceded the opening goal in all four away fixtures completed thus far. This should ensure a fast start for the Hammers who have netted the first goal in each of their last five matches in the competition.

West Ham First Team to Score

Man Utd Preview – Prefer to do things the hard way on their travels?

The half-time introduction of Edinson Cavani at St Mary’s last Sunday proved an inspired move by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Manchester United (W5 D1 L3) fought back from 2-0 down against Southampton to earn a 3-2 win. The Uruguayan laid on the assist for Bruno Fernandes before the former PSG frontman netted a brace – the last of them coming in second-half stoppage time – to cap an instrumental 45 minute salvo.

United have now won all four away Premier League games this season, despite finding themselves trailing after conceding the opening goal in all four, and are now the only side that can boast a flawless record on the road. They have now won their past eight away league games, which is a new club record, netting two or more throughout this sequence since a 3-0 victory at The Amex against Brighton on June 30.

Unsurprisingly, no team has recovered more points this season from losing positions than United (12). Whether it is before or during a game, writing this team off comes with a high degree of risk – as I discovered for myself after tipping up Southampton’s chances of avoiding defeat last time. The Red Devils are still lagging behind their rivals, though, languishing in ninth, some five points adrift of leaders Tottenham.

West Ham Vs Manchester United Betting Advice

With both teams coming into this fixture on the back of three successive Premier League victories, someone will naturally be disappointed come the end of their contest at the London Stadium. West Ham have scored the opening goal in their last five matches and could exploit Man Utd’s slow starting nature on Saturday. The Red Devils have conceded first in all four away games so far, only to mount a comeback and win them all.

West Ham Vs Manchester United – Key Facts:

  • The three previous occasions when West Ham have started above Manchester United in the Premier League before playing them, the Hammers have never won (D1 L2).
  • Manchester United have won their last eight away Premier League matches, a new club record, doing so in each of the last four despite conceding first.
  • Three of the past four Premier League meetings between the sides featured both teams scoring, while West Ham are bidding for a third successive home win.

Just one of the four meetings held in the past two seasons hasn’t featured both teams among the goals and there appears every likelihood that this latest instalment follows suit. Since a 2-0 loss here to Newcastle on the opening day, West Ham have scored in all four home fixtures, but have shut out just two of five visiting sides so far. Meanwhile, Man Utd‘s propensity for scoring and conceding away from home is well documented.
