Preview: Having come out on top in a six-goal epic when the sides met at St James’ Park earlier in the season, West Ham now have an opportunity to complete a third Premier League double over Newcastle. However, the Magpies have won on each of their last two visits to the London Stadium, prevailing 2-0 in last season’s corresponding fixture.

West Ham – Top four aspirations on the slide?

Last week’s King Power draw means West Ham have one win from their last four Premier League games, as their push for Champions League qualification hits the buffers. It would have been worse last time were it not for a dubious late equaliser from defender Craig Dawson. But that result at Leicester, coupled with Man Utd’s win in midweek, means the Hammers start this weekend outside the league’s top four.

These are slightly worrying times, then, for David Moyes and his players, who are looking like the team they are: one which has played more minutes in 2021-22 than any other in the English top-flight. Their only win across their last five competitive fixtures was against a Watford outfit enduring the division’s worst spell, having also been pushed into extra-time by non-league Kidderminster in the FA Cup.

Key Stat: Five of the past seven West Ham Premier League home games saw both teams score, four of which produced a 3-2 scoreline (W3 L1).

Newcastle – Magpies looking up rather than down under Howe?

A revival is in full swing on Tyneside. Three consecutive Premier League victories, edging out Aston Villa and Leeds 1-0 either side of a rousing performance in their 3-1 win at home to Everton, enough for Newcastle to move four points clear of the bottom three having looked relegation fodder for much of the season. That was prior to the arrival of manager Eddie Howe whose team are now five league games unbeaten.

Only the two Manchester clubs are enjoying longer sequences in the league without defeat, which shows how drastic the transformation has been under former Bournemouth boss Howe. Momentum is undoubtedly with them. Although losing full-back Kieran Trippier, whose performances have stood as a catalyst for the team’s resurgent form, to injury could prove a telling blow in the weeks to come.

Key Stat: Newcastle have scored directly from a free-kick in each of their last three Premier League games, once from Jonjo Shelvey and twice via Kieran Trippier. No team in the history of the competition has ever scored directly from a free-kick in four consecutive matches.

West Ham Vs Newcastle Betting Advice

Earlier in the season, the price on a West Ham victory at home to Newcastle would have been a lot shorter than it is currently (4/6 generally). This highlights the shift in momentum undertaken by both teams. West Ham have one win in their last four league games and continue to look a jaded side. Meanwhile Newcastle are full of confidence and unbeaten in five, seeking a fourth league win on the bounce.

West Ham Vs Newcastle – Key Facts:

  • Versus no other team does Newcastle United have more Premier League away victories than it does West Ham (10), winning away to the Hammers in each of the previous two seasons (3-2 and 2-0).
  • Whereas West Ham come into Saturday’s contest at a low ebb having won only once in four league games (D1 L2), Newcastle are flying. The Magpies are unbeaten in five, winning their last three.
  • Newcastle have scored in five straight Premier League games. They now face a West Ham side that has seen both teams score more times than anyone else (16 of 25 league games this term).

At 4/1 to collect all three points, Newcastle – with wins away from home against West Ham in each of the previous two seasons – are an enticing proposition. However, the absence of Kieran Trippier feels significant. Instead, plump for goals. West Ham’s league games this season have seen both teams score more often (16/25) than any other, while Newcastle are looking to score for the sixth league game running.
