West Ham – Moyes’ men must score at London Stadium?

A slender loss in Spain last week means there is work to do for West Ham at London Stadium, where David Moyes is urging supporters to get behind his team as they attempt to overturn a 1-0 aggregate deficit. Prior to this, the Hammers topped their group with four wins out of six (D1 L1). They finished with a record of W2 L1 as hosts. 2-0 and 3-0 victories versus Rapid Vienna and Genk, respectively, preceding a 1-0 loss to Dinamo Zagreb. The latter a result of numerous personnel changes from Moyes.

West Ham were already through by the time they faced the Croatian side, though, and so could afford to rest players. Unfortunately, David Moyes is currently sweating on the availability of some key figures. Jarrod Bowen has been a revelation this season but sat out Sunday’s 2-1 home win over Aston Villa, a game which saw set-piece specialist Aaron Cresswell but also top scorer Michail Antonio pick up knocks.

Key Stat: Only one of seven West Ham Europa League matches this term – and none of three held at the London Stadium – produced both teams scoring, with all four Hammers wins thus far (D1 L2) being wins to nil.

Sevilla – La Liga outfit to shut up shop in London?

While it is undoubtedly advantage Sevilla ahead of the second leg, the Spanish side – currently second in La Liga having finished fourth last term – will be wary of holding onto such a slight lead. This is because their record on these shores isn’t the best, winning only one of eight visits to England (W1 D4 L3) with that being their 2-1 success away to Manchester United in the second leg of a Champions League tie in 2017/18.

Yet their pedigree in the competition is such, having lifted the UEFA Cup/Europa League a combined six times, more recently in 2019/20, that they will be expected to progress on Thursday. Performances in Europe this season though have been sub-par. They ended the Champions League group stage with a record of W1 D3 L2 before scraping through a play-off against Dinamo Zagreb, winning the tie 3-1 despite defeat in Croatia.

Key Stat: The Spanish outfit are currently winless across their past five away European matches (D3 L2), but had boasted four successive wins away from home in the knockout rounds of the Europa League prior to going down 1-0 in Zagreb last time.

West Ham Vs Sevilla Betting Advice

The manner in which West Ham eased through the group stage suggested they could go far in the knockout rounds provided the draw was kind. Well it wasn’t, as they’ve been paired against four-time Europa League winners Sevilla who take a lead, albeit a slender one, to East London for this second leg. Without that buffer, a Sevilla which is yet to win on their travels in Europe this term (D2 L2) would have faced an uphill task.

West Ham Vs Sevilla – Key Facts:

  • Having topped Europa League Group H (W4 D1 L1), West Ham were rewarded with a Round of 16 clash against four-time competition winners Sevilla who dropped down from the Champions League (W1 D3 L2).
  • All four West Ham victories in Europe this term were without conceding a goal. Meanwhile Sevilla are without a goal in three of four European away games in 2021/22 so far (D2 L2).
  • No more than one team scored in six of seven West Ham European matches this term, and in just three of eight for Sevilla including only one of four away from home.

West Ham won both European home games this season without conceding in which they named their strongest XI. The 1-0 home loss to Dinamo Zagreb only coming about because David Moyes made wholesale changes on account of his side being confirmed as Group H winners. Clearly Sevilla are a sterner assignment. But if the likes of Bowen and Antonio are declared fit, I can envisage a special night at London Stadium.
