Preview: Europa League football will be the reward for West Ham provided they pick up the point they need to confirm a sixth-place finish in this season’s Premier League. Considering they have beaten Southampton here, at London Stadium, in each of the past three seasons, the hosts will be feeling confident about their chances.

West Ham – Moyes on cusp of Europa League qualification?

David Moyes is on course to guide West Ham (W18 D8 L11) to their highest Premier League finish for more than twenty years, with a point at London Stadium against Southampton on Sunday all that is required to ensure a sixth-place finish and a spot in next season’s UEFA Europa League group stage. However, the inaugural UEFA Conference League awaits should they lose and Spurs win away to Leicester.

The Hammers will be confident of fulfilling their obligations though. Eight places and 19 points better off in the table than their final day opponents, West Ham are bidding to win a home Premier League game against Southampton for the fourth season in a row. Last season’s 3-1 scoreline, meanwhile, was the third consecutive home meeting in which they had scored precisely three times (other two both ended 3-0).

Not that their recent form has been much to write home about. The midweek win away to lowly West Brom was extremely hard-fought and only their second in six league games (D1 L3). Furthermore, David Moyes’ men have lost the last two at London Stadium – losing 1-0 to both Everton and Chelsea – with that as many defeats as they had sustained across their previous 15 Premier League home games (W9 D4).

Southampton – Saints away woes set to continue?

After narrowly missing out on a top-ten finish last season, the best Southampton (W12 D7 L18) can hope to achieve on the final day is 12. This would require them to win away at West Ham in the Premier League for the first time since 2016, having lost on all three subsequent visits to the London Stadium, and hoping the teams directly above them, Crystal Palace and Wolves, fail to do the same.

However, the Saints had threatened to end a turbulent campaign with a real flourish – one that seen them top the table in November before a disastrous second half to the season saw them unravel at an alarming rate of knots. A return of seven points from four games preceded the 2-0 loss at home to Leeds on Tuesday. None of these points were earned away from St Mary’s though.

Since the turn of the year, Southampton have featured on ten occasions in an away Premier League game. Their only win – and points – came in a 2-0 win over bottom side Sheffield United, with six of their nine away defeats in 2021 being ‘to nil’. It is a dire trend which has every likelihood of continuing on Sunday. The Saints have only conjured up one goal across their previous three visits to West Ham, losing all three.

West Ham Vs Southampton Betting Advice

For a Southampton side which has lost nine of its ten Premier League away matches in 2021, a visit to West Ham, who are seeking the point they need to confirm their place in the Europa League next season, feels ominous for their chances of ending an underwhelming campaign on a winning note. Particularly as the Saints lost here in each of the past three seasons, conceding three goals each time.

West Ham Vs Southampton – Key Facts:

  • Before the goalless draw at St Mary’s in December, West Ham had won all five previous Premier League meetings with Southampton, including each of the last three at London Stadium.
  • Five of West Ham‘s nine Premier League home wins this season were without conceding. However, David Moyes’ side are currently ten league games without a clean sheet.
  • Southampton have registered seven points from their last five Premier League matches (W2 D1 L2). However, they have lost nine of ten away league games in 2021.

I cannot see anything other than a routine home victory. West Ham may have lost their past two at home but were only narrowly beaten each time, and by sides currently third and eighth respectively. Sunday’s opponents are languishing in 14th, and have lost all but one of their ten Premier League away fixtures in 2021. West Ham & BTTS stands out – the Hammers are without a clean sheet in ten league games.
