Preview: The Sydney Derby can whet the appetite for those up bright and early on Saturday, as Western Sydney clash with Sydney FC at Bankwest Stadium. Despite a comfortable lead atop Australia’s A-League, Sydney FC have fared miserably in this season’s pair of head-to-head meetings, losing both 1-0, and so will be desperate to buck the trend this weekend.

Western Sydney Preview – Hat-trick of Derby Day spoils?

Missing the cut in each of the past two seasons, Western Sydney Wanderers (8th – W7 D4 L9) have work to do to ensure an unwanted hat-trick is avoided by qualifying for the Final Series with a placement of sixth-place or better. As things stand, The Wanderers are two points adrift in eighth, making their need for points in the latest Sydney Derby arguably more important than any potential bragging rights.

Yet the spoils have been exclusively theirs in 2019/20. Back-to-back 1-0 victories over Sydney FC mean they are the only team during this A-League season to have beaten the runaway league leaders. The latest coming on the road in late February courtesy of captain Matt Duke’s late headed winner, which marked a third win in four games at that particular time. They are without a win in two attempts thereafter.

Both efforts were on their travels, however, losing at Brisbane Roar (3-1) before drawing with Melbourne City (1-1), and a return to home comforts should boost their claims once again. Wanderers would claim four points from their last two contests at home, even scoring five last time out at their Bankwest Stadium in a 5-2 success over Adelaide United to round off their record on home soil at W3 D3 L3, GF13 GA11.

Sydney FC Preview – Another title edges ever nearer?

A third A-League title in four seasons beckons for Sydney FC (1st – W15 D2 L2). The Sky Blues have been the class act thus far, dropping only ten points and sustaining only two defeats to sit ten points clear of their nearest pursuer despite having played a couple games less. The only real blemish being their disappointing performances in the pair of Sydney Derbies, losing both encounters without as much as scoring a goal.

Steve Corica’s men have one final opportunity to put their record against the other team from Sydney right before the season reaches what they hope is an inevitable conclusion. Three more wins should seal the A-League title. None would taste sweeter than acquiring the first of those here, at Bankwest Stadium, where The Sky Blues had clinched victory in six of eight visits prior to losing 1-0 in October.

Formidable travellers, Sydney FC have failed to win only two of their nine away encounters so far (W7 D1 L1, GF22 GA8), last doing so in a 2-2 draw in Wellington before Christmas. Four successive away victories have followed, with the latest a 4-1 drubbing of Melbourne Victory meaning they have now scored at least twice in all but one of their road fixtures this season. The exception, of course, being away at Western Sydney.

Western Sydney Vs Sydney FC Betting Advice

Top of the table Sydney FC have been the dominant force in Australian football in 2019/20, winning 15 of 19 fixtures thus far to position themselves within three more wins of claiming a third A-League championship in four seasons. Western Sydney are highly unlikely to roll out the red carpet though. The hosts are not on course to qualify for the Final Series and urgently need points, while their two head-to-head victories this season must give them tremendous belief.

Western Sydney Vs Sydney FC – Key Facts

  • Western Sydney have scored no more than one goal in six of nine A-League home matches in 2019/20, with their total of 13 home goals better than just two teams.
  • Sydney FC would secure all three points in seven of their nine away A-League games this season (W7 D1 L1), scoring more goals (22) and conceding less of them (8) in said matches than any other team.
  • Both league encounters this season between the two teams were won 1-0 by Western Sydney. Prior to this, though, Sydney FC had prevailed in four of five A-League meetings.

Despite losing home and away to Western Sydney, there can be no mistaking Sydney FC as being the superior side of the two. The visitors have also excelled on the road lately, reeling off four straight wins whilst scoring 12 goals in the process, and are expected to account for their Sydney Derby rivals at the third time of asking.
