Wigan Preview – Will Wigan show their resilience once again and pick up another crucial three points?

Assuming Wigan’s appeal against their 12 point deduction fails then the Lactics would essentially be in the bottom three at the moment and actually bottom of the table. The goalless draw away to Barnsley – who are currently bottom – could yet be a point earned but equally, there will be some frustration amongst the coaching staff and players that they were unable to get the win.

With three games remaining  it means that Wigan have to target at least seven points between now and the end of the season to preserve their Championship status.

 

The battle at the bottom is going to go to the wire and whilst Wigan are involved through no fault of their own and not as a result of what’s happened on the park, they are going to have to battle for every point if they are to survive.

It goes without saying that a home game against a team also involved in the relegation scrap is going to be seen as a must win. Wigan then travel to face Charlton (also involved) before finishing their season at home to Fulham.

Hull Preview – Can Hull recover from three straight defeats and lift themselves out the bottom three?

Whilst Wigan find themselves in the battle to avoid the drop due to off-the-field issues, Hull have nobody to blame other than themselves for the position they are in. Grant McCann’s men are third bottom having lost three straight and they are hitting another terrible run of form at precisely the wrong time. They’re currently one point below safety at the moment in what is becoming an increasingly tight battle to stay in the league.

Hull have had a terrible 2020. Since winning on New Year’s Day, Hull have won only one of their last 17 in the league games which was courtesy of a last-minute winner at home to Middlesbrough at the beginning of July.

With the other teams around them picking up points it’s been a gradual descent into the bottom three and these next three games are perhaps as important as any in Hull’s recent history. The financial implications of going into the third tier would be disastrous for the club.

One of they key reasons why Hull have been terrible this calendar year is losing Jarrod Bowen to West Ham in the January transfer window. He had scored 17 goals in the first half of the campaign with the current highest scorer is on five league goals.

 

Wigan are simply in much better form at the moment and will be going all out to win this one. Hull have looked toothless so often in recent weeks and have not kept a clean sheet since the 1st of January. As such, this is a game where the home team can boost their own hopes of staying up.
