Feyenoord travel to Austria to take on Wolfsberger on Thursday knowing they need all three points if they are to leapfrog their opponents and reach the knockout phase.

Wolfsberger Preview – Can Austrians make history and get the result they need to qualify for knockout stage?

In what is just their second appearance in the group stage of the Europa League, Wolfsberger are hoping to make some history tomorrow by reaching the knockout phase for the first time. The Austrian Bundesliga outfit have a two point advantage over their Group K opponents. It means that if they can avoid defeat at home then they will go through along with Dinamo Zagreb.

A huge 1-0 win away to CSKA Moscow last week has put them in this position. That was their second win in this group having already thumped Feyenoord 4-1 on their travels. Ironically (and also concerning) is the fact that they’ve only taken a point from their two home games thus far.

Stretching that back further and Wolfsberger have been poor at home in Europe for a while. They’ve won only of their last seven home games in European competition stretching back to 2015. In terms of the group stage, it’s three defeats and two draws. So that will be a worry for Ferdinand Feidhofer – the club’s head coach.
Michael Liendl was the hero for Wolfsberger in the first match against Feyenoord as his hat-trick set them on their way to the win which could yet be decisive in the context of this group.

Feyenoord Preview – Will Feyenoord gain revenge for humbling at home and ensure qualification in the process?

Dick Advocaat is no stranger to success in this competition having won it back in 2008 when coach of Zenit St Petersburg. Repeating that feat is some way off with his current team but he will be hoping they have what it takes to get the win they need that sees Feyenoord through to the last-32. It was something he was unable to achieve after taken over last season and with a change of coach almost inevitable at the end of the season, it will be his last chance at the club.

There will be no shortage of motivation for the visitors following that first meeting where they seen the opposition awarded three penalties.

Feyenoord’s form in general through the group stage has been inconsistent. Their only win to date was a 3-1 win at home to CSKA – a game where they scored three of their five goals in the section. Both of their away games have ended in goalless draws and whilst they obviously need a win from this game, it is at least something to build upon and take confidence from.

On a more concerning note for Advocaat is the fact that the club have won only one of their last 12 away games in the competition.

Wolfsberger vs Feyenoord Betting Advice

Although it was a wide-margin victory for Wolfsberger when the sides met on match day two, they did benefit from decisions on the night. The home team will also have to ensure their mentality is right for this game considering they know a draw does them.

For Feyenoord it’s a much more simple scenario. Anything less than a win and they will wave goodbye to European competition for another season.

Key Facts – Wolfsberger vs Feyenoord Betting Tip

  • Both of Wolfsberger’s wins in this group have come away from home, although a draw does them here
  • Feyenoord have drawn both their away games 0-0 in this section and won just one of their last 12 away
  • The Austrians were convincing winners when the teams met in Rotterdam back in October

We’ve got a team who don’t win many at home in Europe against a team who win even less often on their travels. With two draws apiece in the section I think that’s the way to go once again. A result which would see the Austrians qualify for the knockout stage.
