Wolfsburg Preview – Wolves refreshed without European distraction?

Despite a lack of European football during the week (they were eliminated at the final qualifying hurdle for the Europa League earlier in the month), Wolfsburg are once again pencilled in for a Sunday Bundesliga game. Three of their four league fixtures this season have come on this day, largely owing to their previous schedule, however, this will be the first not to follow hot on the heels of a European outing.

In other words, it might be worth dismissing – to some extent – this team’s previous body of work until now. The Thursday part of the Thursday-Sunday schedule has gone meaning Oliver Glasner, the Wolfsburg coach who finds himself under a little bit of pressure, has, in theory, a fresher and more focused group at his disposal who can hopefully benefit from not having had a competitive outing during the week.

Whether some fresh legs is all it takes to inspire a first Bundesliga victory of the season remains to be seen, but it can only help. Wolfsburg are one of four sides still searching for their first league win of 2020-21, drawing all four matches to date. A couple ended goalless here, with Leverkusen and Augsburg. Meanwhile, the last side to draw each of their opening five Bundesliga matches was Hertha Berlin in 2004.

Arminia Bielefeld Preview – Early performances have been encouraging?

Prior to the most recent round, Arminia Bielefeld had done well to ensure they were competitive in the early throes of their first Bundesliga campaign in more than a decade. After drawing their opening fixture 1-1 in Frankfurt, who have since gone on to win two of the next three, the 2019-20 2. Bundesliga champions would secure a first win by edging out FC Koln at home. Before a narrow 1-0 loss in Bremen.

Last week, however, saw them fall to a heavy defeat. Not that there was any disgrace to be had from a 4-1 scoreline against a Bayern Munich side expected to run away with the title once more. However, it is the first meaningful setback suffered since promotion for Uwe Neuhaus and his team. Therefore it will be interesting to see what the response will be, in a fixture that, historically, has given them problems.

The Blues have not beaten The Wolves since a 3-1 victory in Wolfsburg in 2007. Since then they have lost four successive meetings. The most recent of those, meanwhile, a convincing 4-0 loss in the 2014-15 DFB Pokal Cup. Their upcoming opponents have begun slowly, though, and have registered the same number of point as themselves, suggesting there is little for them to be in awe of inside Volkswagen Arena.

Wolfsburg Vs Arminia Bielefeld Betting Advice

Lethargic would be the kindest way to describe Wolfsburg in the early part of the season, having struggled to make any impression in the league whilst simultaneously battling to qualify in Europe. The result has been four successive Bundesliga draws and a premature exit from the Europa League. Disappointment is naturally rife, but there should at least be some fresher legs and minds in camp.

Wolfsburg Vs Arminia Bielefeld – Key Facts

  • The last team to register five consecutive draws at the start of a Bundesliga campaign was Hertha Berlin in 2004 – an unwanted feat Wolfsburg can equal on Sunday.
  • Three of the first four matches since Arminia Bielefeld returned to the Bundesliga have finished Under 2.5 Goals, while a further two went Under 1.5.
  • Since last recording a head-to-head victory over Wolfsburg (a 3-1 away win in 2007), Arminia Bielefeld have lost all four prior meetings by a 1-12 aggregate.

The onus is undoubtedly on the hosts following such an underwhelming start. This could work in the favour of Arminia Bielefeld, then, who have fared reasonably well (W1 D1 L2) upon returning to the German top tier. Goals have proven scarce for both sides, though, combining for only five goals in eight Bundesliga games thus far. All but one went Under 2.5 Goals, which, as logic dictates, is how this match-up should go.
