Wolfsburg Preview – Playing at home not the strength it should be?

The Wolves stepped up preparations for the new Bundesliga season with a comfortable 4-0 victory in Albania on Thursday evening, overcoming little known FK Kukesi to ease into the third qualifying round of the Europa League. It was a second four-goal victory in a week for Olivier Glasner’s side, after their 4-1 scoreline in the DFB Pokal versus lower league Union Furstenwalde. Next up, Bayer Leverkusen.

Sunday’s opponents are expected to cause them a lot more problems. In the last four seasons, Wolfsburg have recorded only two wins in eight league meetings (W2 D2 L4) versus Leverkusen. Both coming away from their Volkswagen Arena. Their last win at home in this fixture was in October 2015, losing all four subsequent encounters in Lower Saxony, and by a damning 2-9 aggregate.

These issues are not limited to past meetings either. Last season, Wolfsburg were heavily reliant on their displays on the road: 61% of their points were earned away from home, where they won only four of seventeen (W4 D7 L6) Bundesliga games. They were zero from five here (D2 L3) during post-lockdown, and it was during this period Die Wolfe ran riot inside Leverkusen’s Bay Arena, scoring four times in an emphatic 4-1 scoreline.

Bayer Leverkusen Preview – Can Die Werkself offer up same goal threat?

European football also awaits this season, only for Bayer Leverkusen it wasn’t the competition they had their hearts set on after missing out on the Champions League by two points at the expense of Borussia Monchengladbach. A fifth place finish was a harsh price for seeing their form dip in the closing stages, but it is their reality, and they would be wise to use this apparent failure as motivation for the campaign ahead.

Another assault on the top four places is being touted. Bearing in mind they fell short whilst having both Kai Havertz and Kevin Volland on their books, the likelihood of them faring much better without either might seem speculative. The German internationals have since moved to pastures new, to Chelsea and AS Monaco respectively, and leave behind huge voids having contributed 22 league goals between them last term.

On a more positive note, Peter Bosz can feel reasonably content with how his team performed on their travels last season. Despite failing to win their last two away encounters, dropping five costly points at Schalke (1-1) and Hertha Berlin (2-0), only three teams registered more points away from home (32 – W10 D2 L5). Among their ten away victories, meanwhile, a 2-0 scoreline away to Wolfsburg on Matchday 10.

Wolfsburg Vs Bayer Leverkusen Betting Advice

Both teams made light work of their opening DFB Pokal assignments last weekend, while for Wolfsburg they have an extra competitive game under their belts following Thursday’s 4-0 victory in Albania in the Europa League. The fact they are at home, rather than having to do more travelling, should work in the latter’s favour although their record on their own patch was surprisingly poor last season.

Wolfsburg Vs Bayer Leverkusen – Key Facts

  • One win from eight Bundesliga home games in 2020 for Wolfsburg (W1 D3 L4), a run which seen them net no more than once on six occasions.
  • Only three teams – Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig – collected more away points in the Bundesliga last season than Bayer Leverkusen (W10 D2 L5).
  • Each of the previous five Bundesliga meetings has been won by the away side on the day, with Leverkusen seeking their fifth consecutive victory at the Volkswagen Arena.

History tells us Bayer Leverkusen, who go into the game as favourites, deserve their favourtism for this with Die Werkself winning each of the last four Bundesliga meetings inside Wolfsburg’s Volkswagen Arena. Last season seen the visitor’s depart with a 2-0 win. That was something of a rarity, though: 13 of the last 14 league meetings produced three or more goals, with last season’s corresponding fixture the rare exception. 2-1 Bayer Leverkusen.
