Wolfsburg – Weghorst to help Wolves defend from the front?

A once handsome cushion on fifth-placed Dortmund has been cut down to size, owing to a dip in form from Olivier Glasner’s side. Thankfully, Wolfsburg (W16 D9 L5) would come good during the midweek round. A 3-1 victory away in Stuttgart preserving a five-point advantage enjoyed over the Black & Yellows, who next visit Lower Saxony looking to become the second visiting team to prosper in as many visits.

The flying Dutchman that is Wout Weghorst now has 20 goals for the season, netting a diving header in their latest triumph to continue his most prolific ever spell in Germany. The imposing forward has six goals and four assists across his last seven Bundesliga appearances, including a sumptuous finish past the division’s finest stopper, Manuel Neuer, in last week’s 3-2 loss to Bayern at this venue.

Prior to hosting the record German champions, Wolfsburg had remained unbeaten at home throughout the season (W9 D4). Meanwhile, those three goals were the first to be scored by a visiting side since RB Leipzig netted twice in a 2-2 stalemate in January, ending a run of five straight home clean sheets (W4 D1). Another shutout this weekend, though, would see them close in on a first win over Dortmund since 2015.

Borussia Dortmund – Win or bust at Volkswagen Arena?

Last season’s Bundesliga runners-up have endured an underwhelming campaign this time around, but can redeem themselves should they continue clutching up in their ongoing pursuit of the top four. Three consecutive league wins for the first time since October, coming against Brement, Stuttgart and, more recently, Union Berlin, has the Black and Yellows (W16 D4 L10) almost back within striking distance.

Wednesday’s gritty 2-0 victory at Signal Iduna Park, overcoming a typically spirited and industrious Union Berlin who struck the woodwork on two separate occasions, keeps Dortmund within four points of fourth-placed Frankfurt. The latter are away in Leverkusen this weekend, for a fixture they invariably lose. Earlier that same day, BVB are at Wolfsburg for a fixture they simply cannot seem to stop winning.

Dortmund prevailed 2-0 when these sides met first time around this season. Jadon Sancho confirming the win in the closing stages with his team’s second goal, earning them their fifth straight victory over a Wolves side who will be striving to avoid a sixth successive home defeat in this fixture. The away form of Edin Terzic’s side has been erratic, though, with only two wins from the last seven outings (D1 L4).

Wolfsburg Vs Borussia Dortmund Betting Advice

In what is absolutely a must-win game, Dortmund certainly have enough winning momentum behind them to see them go close to said desired outcome. Both sides were victorious during the midweek round. However, whereas it was a much-needed return to winning ways for Wolfsburg, following defeats to Bayern and Frankfurt, victory against Union Berlin for Dortmund saw them pick up all three points for the third match running.

Wolfsburg Vs Borussia Dortmund – Key Facts:

  • The Volkswagen Arena has proven a happy hunting ground for Dortmund, with wins on each of their last five visits maintaining an 11-match unbeaten Bundesliga run (W10) versus Wolfsburg.
  • The Wolves have been imperious on their own patch throughout the season, however, with Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich the only visiting team to win here (W9 D4 L1).
  • Dortmund don’t particularly excel on their travels either, at least not lately, with only two wins coming from their previous seven away Bundesliga outings (D1 L4).

The history of this fixture, with 10 wins from the past 11 Bundesliga meetings, would also suggest Dortmund are the likely winners. However, it is difficult to trust a side with four defeats from their past seven away league games (W1 D2). Especially at a venue where just the five teams have so far managed to avoid losing this season, and only runaway leaders Bayern emerged victorious. Wolfsburg look too big, therefore, to end their BVB hoodoo.
