Preview: Saturday’s fixture inside Volkswagen Arena could have significant ramifications on both ends of the Bundesliga table, as a Wolfsburg side keen to strengthen their grip on the Champions League places host a struggling Cologne outfit in danger of dropping down a division.

Wolfsburg – Flying Dutchman to fire again?

Olivier Glasner has to be a strong contender for coach of the season in Germany. Even more so should he succeed in steering the club back into the Champions League, which he is well on course to achieve. The Wolves (W14 D9 L3) are in third position and find only RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich ahead of them, while the crucial gap to fifth has grown to eight points following their 2-1 victory in Bremen before the break.

That win last time out made it eight in their last ten Bundesliga games, having lost only once in the league since the first week of January. Only in their title winning season of 2008/09, meanwhile, have they had as many as 51 points at this stage, while they are still one of three teams unbeaten on their own patch (W8 D4). A clean sheet on Saturday would be their fifth consecutively at the Volkswagen Arena.

While the defence continues to serve up very little for opposing attackers (22 conceded in 26 games), the Wolves’ own star forward frequently delivers. For the sake of betting purposes, Wout Weghorst was technically the game’s first goalscorer last weekend, after Wolfsburg benefited from an early own goal before the Dutchman made it three goals in as many games, and 17 for the season, shortly before half-time.

FC Koln – Nervy times in Cologne?

In only four previous seasons has FC Koln (W5 D8 L13) been worse off at this stage than their current tally of 23 points from 26 games, and in each of these four seasons the club went on to be relegated from the Bundesliga. So these are, understandably, anxious times in Cologne for The Billy Goats who occupy the league’s relegation play-off – with a single point the difference between automatic relegation and safety.

Markus Gisdol must have felt his team had done enough to finally get over the line last time though, when leading 2-1 at their RheinEnergieStadium with only minutes remaining. Erling Haaland’s late goal to salvage a draw for his Dortmund team-mates was therefore the equivalent of a suckerpunch for the Cologne boss, whose side remain winless in six games (D2 L4) since a 2-1 win at Gladbach on 6 February.

The Volkswagen Arena awaits in Matchday 27 and it is a venue that must fill the visitors with dread. FC Koln last won away to Wolfsburg in January 2010, losing on five of seven subsequent visits including the past two seasons. If only to compound their sense of inevitability this weekend, The Billy Goats are in dreadful form away from home, losing the last three such matches by a combined aggregate of 2-9.

Wolfsburg Vs FC Koln Betting Advice

While we cannot completely rule out the possibility of the away side getting something from this contest, with FC Koln producing some useful results on the road at some of the league’s top sides (won at Dortmund and Gladbach while also earning a goalless draw at RB Leipzig), this does look a big mismatch on paper between a Wolfsburg outfit who are flying and the free-falling team from Cologne.

Wolfsburg Vs FC Koln – Key Facts:

  • The Wolves are currently seven matches unbeaten (W5 D2) when hosting FC Koln, whose last win dates back more than eleven years ago (2-3 in January 2010).
  • Wolfsburg are still to lose a Bundesliga home game this season (W8 D4), keeping a clean sheet in 58% of these games including each of the past four.
  • FC Koln are winless in six (D2 L4) and will be striving to avoid a fourth consecutive away defeat this weekend. They have, however, scored in 8/13 away games this term.

Without a win in six having lost the last three away, FC Koln have it all to do if they are to become the first visiting team to win inside Volkswagen Arena in 2020/21. Wolfsburg are four home games without so much as a goal conceded (W3 D1), thrashing bottom side Schalke 5-0 last time out here. Meanwhile, striker Wout Weghorst has netted in six of his team’s eight home victories this season. That looks the bet here.
