Preview: Sunday’s Volkswagen Arena affair could have a significant bearing on which of these teams kicks on in their quest to avoid the drop. Greuther Furth aren’t surrendering to relegation without a fight and arrive in Saxony in the better shape, unbeaten in four ahead of their meeting with a Wolfsburg outfit without a win since November.

Wolfsburg – From Champions League to Bundesliga 2?

The final days of the winter transfer window sparked a small upheaval in Saxony, as the Wolfsburg faithful said goodbye to a man whose 20 Bundesliga goals last season propelled the club into the Champions League. The club did at least move quickly to fill the Dutchman’s void, bringing in Danish international Jonas Wind and recruiting Max Kruse from rivals Union Berlin for his second spell at the Volkswagen Arena.

Head coach Florian Kohfeldt finds himself under immense pressure to turn things around, and must now ensure all these new parts fit together. Die Wolves have 21 points after 20 matchdays, 17 fewer than at this same stage last season, and are only a couple points above the relegation places. They haven’t won a league game since early November. Taking two of last 27 points, having failed to score in their last four.

Key Stat: Should the home side not manage to score past the Bundesliga’s leakiest defence within the opening 58 minutes on Sunday, they will set a new club record for longest amount of time without scoring in the competition (they’re currently at 399 minutes).

Greuther Furth – Cloverleaves believing in the great escape?

Seemingly doomed and destined for a swift return to the second division, a four-game unbeaten run (W1 D3) – which is a new club record in the Bundesliga – has ignited fresh hopes that the Cloverleaves are capable of pulling off the unthinkable. There is still much ground to be made up on the sides above them, though, with 16th-placed Augsburg and the relegation play-off their primary target.

Stefan Leitl’s side have displayed an abundance of grit and resilience of late, with only Arminia Bielefeld and Union Berlin enjoying longer unbeaten runs right now. Dortmund were the only side to best them across the last six rounds (W2 D3). While last time out they beat Mainz 2-1 at home, scoring multiple goals for the second game running (also 2-2 away to Bielefeld) – something they hadn’t previously managed all season.

Key Stat: Just one other team in this season’s Bundesliga has scored as few goals as Greuther Furth (17), with that team being Sunday’s hosts Wolfsburg. However, no team has allowed more goals than the 52 of the Cloverleaves, a figure at least 15 more than any other side.

Wolfsburg Vs Greuther Furth Betting Advice

If we could ignore the standings for a moment. A glance at the recent performances would suggest Greuther Furth possess excellent claims this weekend. Sunday’s visitors to the Volkswagen Arena are unbeaten in four having lost once – to second place Dortmund no less – in the last six. Compare and contrast this to a Wolfsburg side winless in nine Bundesliga matches having failed to even score across the last four matchdays.

Wolfsburg Vs Greuther Furth – Key Facts:

  • It is hard to believe there is an 11 point gap between Wolfsburg in 15th who are winless in nine Bundesliga matches (D2 L7), down to Greuther Furth in last-place, the latter unbeaten in their last four (W1 D3).
  • Die Wolfe will need to score if they wish to consign one of their longest ever droughts to the history books, but with no goals from their previous four league fixtures is this even realistic?
  • In sharp contrast, Greuther Furth are looking to score two or more goals for the third consecutive league game, having previously failed to do so all season (18 games).

Previous meetings between them lean more towards a home victory, though, Wolfsburg prevailing three of four times these sides have met in a competitive environment. Yet only one was recent: Die Wolfe’s 2-0 win on the road in September, a contest that was in the balance until the closing stages. Alternatively, simply oppose goals. These are the lowest scorers in the Bundesliga this term (17 apiece from 20 games).
