Wolfsburg Preview – Will Wolfsburg bounce back from defeat last time out to remain in command of third place?
It’s been a hugely promising season for Wolfsburg to this point and the challenge for them is ensuring that they maintain the same level of performance between now and the campaign, and ultimately finish in the top four. They have been in the Champions League spots for the majority of the season and hold a five point advantage over fifth place Bayer Leverkusen in fifth.
Clearly head coach Oliver Glasner will be hoping to finish in their current position of third – which would be their highest placing since 2015 – but the aim is definitely Champions League football, so they have something of a cushion over the teams currently below fourth.

The signs were there in the second half of last season that Schalke were heading for a rude awakening. After beating Borussia Monchengladbach in the first game after the winter break, Schalke failed to win any of their remaining 16 matches – eventually finishing in 12th spot but only eight points above the relegation zone. Considering they were in the top four in January it was a real fall from grace.
With little change in the close season, this campaign has been much of the same. Just one win in 24 league games thus far tells it’s own story and the club sit bottom – 11 points from safety.

Dimitrios Grammozis is the latest man to take charge of the club, the Greek becomes the fifth different head coach already this season. His first game was a goalless draw against Mainz (the team who sit directly above them) so it doesn’t bode well that his appointment will inspire the team to what would be a miraculous comeback.
With their only victory in the league coming at home to Hoffenheim it means Schalke are still looking for their first away victory of the season. They have taken just four points from a possible 33 on their travels.

Wolfsburg will see this as the perfect game to bounce back from their first defeat in the league since the 3rd of January. Schalke are horrendous on the road. No wins, the fewest goals scored away from home and the most conceded. It is grim whichever way you look at it, and their performance last weekend doesn’t suggest a change of fortunes any time soon.
