Wolverhampton Wanderers’ European journey continues when they welcome La Liga side Espanyol to Molineux for the first leg of their Round of 32 UEFA Europa League tie on Thursday. Nuno Espirito Santo’s men are the clear favourites to go through to the last 16. Can Wolves pick up a handsome home win in the first leg?

Wolverhampton Wanderers Preview – Will Wolves be too strong on home soil?

Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolverhampton Wanderers started their Europa League campaign way back in July. In fact, Thursday’s game will be their 13th match in Europe. Wanderers have won ten of the other 12. In the qualifiers, they beat Crusaders, Pyunik Yerevan and Torino.

Wolves were then paired up with Braga, Besiktas and Slovan Bratislava in the group stages. After losing their opening match at home to Braga, Wanderers went on to win four and draw one of their remaining five to book their spot in the last 32 with ease. The Premier League club beat both Besiktas and Bratislava home and away.

Our betting prediction:
Both teams to score – No
7/10

Wolves are doing just fine in the Premier League at the moment, as Nuno’s boys sit eighth after 26 games. Reaching the UEFA Champions League will be the club’s main ambition, and Wolves are currently priced at 12/1 to win the Europa League. Can Nuno guide Wanderers to a comfortable home win in midweek?

Espanyol Preview – Spanish strugglers to struggle at Molineux?

Espanyol may be safely through to the knockouts rounds of the Europa League, but the Spanish side have had a woeful domestic campaign thus far. At the time of writing, the Catalonia club are bottom of La Liga with just 19 points to their name.

So far, they have mustered up just four league wins, losing 13 and drawing seven of the other 20. Despite losing only one of their last six, Abelardo’s boys are still bang in trouble, but they are only two points adrift of safety.

Despite their troubles at home, Espanyol were excellent in the group stages of the Europa League. White and Blues picked up three wins and two draws to win Group H with 11 points to their name. The Spanish team finished three points clear of Ludogorets Razgrad at the top.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Espanyol Betting Advice

Espanyol have been woeful at home in La Liga, but three of their four wins have come on the road. In the Europa League, Magico have won four times away from home (including qualifiers), but they have failed to win any of their previous three away league and cup matches (two defeats, one draw). Abelardo’s Espanyol could be in for a tough night in England.

Key Facts – Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Espanyol Betting Tip

  • Wolves have won only one of their past six league and cup encounters at Molineux
  • Espanyol are rock bottom of La Liga at present
  • Both teams lost just once in the Europa League group stage

Wolves will be hoping to make home advantage count before next week’s trip to Barcelona. Only Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur have won at Molineux since the defeat to Braga in September, and Wanderers should see off struggling Espanyol with ease on Thursday. I’m backing the hosts to win -2 at the top price of 15/4.
