Wednesday night brings us an east versus west midlands clash in the Championship with league leaders, Wolves, taking Derby County at Molineux, as the hosts look to take another big step towards automatic promotion to the Premier League.
Following a rather shaky mid-February to mid-March spell which saw Wolves register just one win from five matches, which included defeats away from home at Fulham and Aston Villa, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have shown great resilience by bouncing back with four wins from their last five matches overall.
Recent wins over Reading, Burton Albion, Middlesbrough and Cardiff City have not only maintained Wolves’ position at the top of the table, but has also opened up a vital eight point cushion over second placed Fulham. If the hosts take all three points here, they’ll move 12 points clear of third placed Cardiff City with just five matches remaining for The Bluebirds.
Derby County registered back-to-back wins on Saturday when they saw off relegation threatened Bolton Wanderers 3-0 at the iPro Stadium, and this vital win followed a narrow 1-0 win away at Preston North End.
However, Garry Rowett’s side are still not out of the woods yet in terms of claiming a play-off place as they lead seventh placed Middlesbrough by just two points, and they face a tough trip across the midlands to take on an in-form Wolves at Molineux here.
Derby have lost on just three occasions away from home all season with a solid looking away record of 8-9-3 27/20 with just one defeat from their last 16 matches on the road which is a creditable record, but I fancy Wolves to nick this one on home turf.
